Tassie ferry.
Want to head to Tassie for 2 weeks mid Nov, for a windsurf, surf trip. I investigate tonight ferry placements, only spots available under 5.3 in length and 2.1 meters in height. My Hiace van SLWB is bigger than those so no spots available at all. Thats for Nov through to February 2026. Is this true ?, are they really that fussy on van length that's not a massive high roof sprinter size or motorhome ??
I've been on before with Toyota Troopcarrier both bigger than 5.3/2.1 meters and never had a problem. I did hear the gov had stuffed up docks for new ferries but thought the if not towing a caravan, it shouldn't be a problem ?,
Can anyone enlighten me of this ridiculous ferry situation for Tassie ??
Yes, very tight to get spots on the ferries over summer. A few of us book well in advance of when we might go, even without knowing fixed dates and then try to shuffle them around if still possible closer to the date, otherwise it can be impossbile, even for a normal car (Prado in my case). Then you also need a cabin for an overnight trip and they can also be fully booked now there isn't sharing with strangers. I'd ring the TT-Line and ask what their tolerances are and see if they will let you book it in even if slightly over, as the length and height restrictions have some leeway (ie height), as I've been at 2.1m in height with gear on the roof racks and there's been room above in some of the lowest areas. You can also put yourself down on a wait list, as people cancel. With regard the new ferries, yes, they were delayed due to the new terminal not being ready, so they are still a year or two away I think.
Thanks for the feed back. Will have to skip Tassie this year as too much BS. Will phone day before to see if somethings available, but will do Phillip island and surrounding area for surf, sup and wave sailing instead!!
I managed to get a booking for late Jan / early Feb 2026 (return trip originating from Tas) - only booked a few days ago. Like you, there was nothing when I looked online, but I gave them a call and they managed to find something - inc. extra height for my 4WD plus boards on top. Might be worth a try?
Often people with larger cars that want to book late go by toll the freight company and fly, its apparently not much more expensive,
