Today we had a couple of Oyster injuries at Dorans, something not talked about for at least 7 years.
Thanks to a dedicated crew about 5 years ago we had a blitz one afternoon on a low tide and removed about two tonne of oysters from the main launch area at Dorans ( about 50-75 metres long ).
Unfortunately, not sure why but there has been a massive influx of smaller oysters in the last 7 months that are very sharp! , taking over the entire area that all windsurfers use to launch/ retrieve close to the shoreline.
TODAY we had a deep foot cut and a back cut through a wetsuit. Both sailors are fine just annoyed!
It is worth all getting together on a set date and having a blitz!!!!, 20 people would nail this problem in about 2 hours.
Date will be posted on this forum , everyone who enjoys Dorans should help, it would be a disaster if it ended up like the Oyster reef at Cremorne Lagoon.
At the moment looking for a low tide in Spring. We would like everyone to participate if they can.
Stay tuned ..
Good thinking I'll be in that. What are we going to do with them when we pluck them from their home - tonnes
It would need checking/liasing, but the oyster farmer's offered to take them and put them on their rubbish pile.
Thats in cremorne, but would stop the stink of rotting oysters, like we had last time.
Does anyone have an aluminum trailer?
I think at least a couple of trailers on the go ( i have one, fos has one) , or we hire a small tipper or a big bin etc etc.
We will dispose of them at the tip, , clean fill, or something like that as we collect. Perhaps we can contact the council and ask them to supply a big bin????, as it is crown land down to low water mark.
I am sure any costs that are involved will be small, and we will be reimbursed.
I also have a trailer and have a son that works around at one of the oyster farms - should be no issues in adding our lot to the mountain already there.
It's going to be hard. Really want a 0.4 or less to be able to really clear it out without having to delve into a foot or more of water. Unfortunately nothing like that for the rest of this year(morning/weekend). Just going to have to make the most of what ever low tide we get.

Sunday 5th November- 4 till 5 on a sunday arvo should be good.
Maybe add it to the windsurfing tas events ?
Might be good to hit in 2 or 3 goes.
Sometime September morning and then have a November afternoon as a clean up of those we could not get during September.
Having a big one on Sunday or mid week afternoon might hit into sailing time and Steve would still need to get home and repack his trailer for work the next day. Also, November is a lot of cut feet away.
We should start next Saturday morning.
The Oyster clean up is on the WT calandar, and the idea is to clean it up ASAP, with the season stating and a Learner day planned.
Many hits could be a good idea. We should mark out the areas we want to target initially , i.e clean strips 5-8 meteres wide down to water were the existing entry points" steps" are.
Perhaps the council supply a bin, might be worth a phone call still, i can ring them.
Dave would the Oyster farm take a mix or 50% oysters 50% rock?
Whenever we do it we have to let everyone know in advance as we really need as many people helping as possible,
Would council issue bags (or we buy them) and they then collect them. Trailers are great and many cheers for those offering but we are dealing with substantial weight.
The trailer can take a lot of weight but can do a few trips if necessary. I can park at the edge of the rocks. Prob be easier just to carry by hand or buckets. I have 3 of the old black recyling bins. If anyone has those bring em along. I reakon the sooner we can do it the better.
OK! Its a go for this Saturday 2nd September, 8.30am start.
Bring your gloves, bucket and some old shoes. Thanks to Steve and Dave for supplying the trailers.
I have about three old black recycle bins as well.
buckets 20litre , bring them as well, easier to lift around.
I will ask if any old bags at the council
we can have.
Ready for Sundays wind![]()

I did see a couple of old bags at the tip today.
Hi guys - have unfortunately drawn a blank with dumping our oysters on the farm where my son works. Went and spoke with one of the bosses today but he advised the general manager had put a stop to the practice. They used to take them from other farms as well but that has also stopped. Since the outbreak of POMS the place is now a full bio security site which was also a complication.
Anyone got any contacts at the council to see if they can help out with bags/collection as part of a community service act?
Last time we did this I have the impression it was not possible to dump them at the transfer station. Recall not so good but perhaps permission was required?? Happy to go see council - just a large skip dropped and collected would do.
Spoke to council today,
They say all staff off sick, no one to help.
Pete we need it by Saturday, so will ask again tomorrow, perhaps you could as well
I will ring in morning asking as a priority.
other options are we take to land fill at Mays point road ( if they are open Saturday) $5-7 trailer load.
Mornington tip centre would be expensive!!!
or... put down 7m by 7m drop cloth and ask council to pick them up?
I still think we should go ahead this Saturday, as long as they are out of the water and dumped in a pile on the shore, we can get rid of them.
Ah dammit. Sorry guys, I can't make it this weekend. I'm away. Let me know of the next one. I'll be there for sure. And I'll line the back of the ute with a tarp and we can fill that. The other get-out-of-jail-free card we might have is to just throw them in a pile on the side of the shore? The main thing is to clear a wide path to the water. If they're away from that area, then that should serve the purpose.
Marty, we did that last time and with the next big front they all washed back in . They might of been dead but still a hazard.
If we can t get a bin, or a site to dump them then i think like a few have said we should put them all in a big pile in either carpark ( top one on bitumen sounds good).
Good news!!
Lauderdale landfill have agreed to take the OYSTERS free of charge on Saturday morning. We just drive about 2km from Dorans with our trailers!
Ok now for a show of hands..
We want at least twenty able bodied men and women please.![]()
So far , Kaleb, Steve, Dave, Pete Freeman , Morgan and myself , Fos?
Plenty of cuts in this lot, photos this morning.
Dont stress if you cant make it people, we will have another one before xmas.
If you think you can even come for one hour that would be good- 8.30 start for a couple of hours

id like to get a front end loader in there and clean up all that crap once and for all, council can waste money on useless feckin infrastructure why cant they help with this
Do we need hammers and screwdrivers to prise them off, or are we planning to takes the rocks as well?
