The Oyster Farmers and the Lumeah Point (Pond) Wild Care Group have organised another oyster clean-up on
12-2pm Sunday 1st March
Followed by a BBQ
Honeywood Drive Reserve - Lagoon/Pond
Would be great if we can get as many sailors helping out as we can muster up. Last year in the two hour stint we collected over 8 tonnes so this year with a more efficient system we should double that.
I've talked to the oyster guys, they'll have 4 barges, 2 large ones the same as last year and 2 smaller ones with wheels so they'll be able to get the barges right up to where we pick the oysters, that will hopefully eliminate the back breaking job of carrying the crates to the barges.
Pleeassse to all the sailors who use the Pond could you come and help cos without your helped we're stuffed
Even if you only have time wiz down for an hour you will be very much appreciated.
This is the absolute best time to gain an understanding of were the same spots are to sail in the lagoon.
A pair of old shoes is highly advised.
Instead of getting rid of them, can we collect them and line them all up into a speed run?

Might sound like a good idea Dave but I reckon we need to get them out altogether 
So much for the last attempt at making a speed run, they ended up more a hindrance than help!

the wifey is away that weekend so I will have the 3 kids......is this a kid safe activity?
If they are in their teens then maybe but if younger i would say no. If they tripped and went hands down into some of those oyster patches it would make your elbow look like a scratch.
It is in shallow water. treading over thousands of oysters, wearing heavy duty industrial gloves lifting heavy buckets
dealing with strong currents, skates and slalom sailors.

Likely to be the same story for me. Maybe we need a creche. How about able bodied sailors go pick up oysters and sailors with a broken leg stay in the carpark and look after kiddies?

Yeah I'll be able to look after kiddies I doubt my leg will be ready to wade out there. Due to OH&S regs with the Oyster Growers and 4 barges unfortunately we can't let little kids out on the water.

I've help at the precious clean-ups and have done so in previous years. But I really don’t understand why the locals and windsurfers have to clean-up other businesses mess. There’re a number of oyster growing businesses utilising a large area within the lagoon for obviously growing oysters and making money. These businesses should be held responsible for cleaning up the wild oysters themselves and on a more regular basis.
I think the wild oyster issue is becoming worse as the years go by and they are dangerous to all recreational users of the lagoon.
Well said, they are a total pain in the arse, let's hire a dozer and get rid of the bloody things.

But I am also happy that local residents and recreational users of the area are happy to combine with the oyster farmers to do the occasional clean up.
Life is a bitch and a bit of a balance.

I agree with you all and so do most of the oyster growers.
Unfortunately over the last few years the feral oysters have taken a hold in spite of a few, but not all, growers trying to do the right thing. The growers that care know they have not managed it well in the past and are very appreciative of our help.
The positive out of all this as a result of the initiative of the local community and windsurfers who have offered to help with the clean ups the oyster growers have got themselves into gear and now have a solid plan to attack the oyster problem.
By taking the initiative we're helping the growers that do care force the growers that don't care to get off there arses.
Please don't forget the oyster cleanup next weekend. If you can spare an hour or two that would be great.
Don't forget this Sunday we have a lucky draw for those who are cool enough to come along..........the prize will be all the oysters picked on the day dropped on your door step
Oysters do seem to on the rampage all around Hobart waters. Can't think where I was, think it was Lindisfarne Bay, and there were feral oysters growing there.
Jez and i did our bit for WT by putting in a good hour or two at Dorans this morning.
Clean up Australia day today. a SKIP bin was provided. Sadly there was a poor turnout.

Pretty successful 2 hour stint between the oyster racks and Squirt Island pulling out an estimated 16 tonnes of oysters, not bad compared to 8 tonnes last year.
We had 10 sailors, 10 oyster growers and 5 barges out on the water and 15 locals on the shore.
Great effort by everyone, it might seem like we're making pretty slow progress but Mike Webb from the Oyster Ass asked me to pass on his thanks to all that have participated in the last two years as by us taking the lead it has helped Mike get all the 5 farms off their arses and tackle the problem that has been caused by themselves. The oyster growers have now taken on a schedule of monthly cleanups.
Now we should have a clear speed run down past the racks.....or so Fos tells me
As for the engine block Jez pulled out at Dorans........we all know he took it home to replace the block in his van...........maybe now he'll succeed in getting it started.
