Police Coms have just rung to say that a shark has been spotted off Btn Beach, about 50 metres out, near Seacliff Caravan Pk about 15 mins ago.
Apparently it is about 2-3 meters in length, heading towards the boat ramp...
Hopefully ur sitting at ur computer reading this and not out there windsurfing :-)
Thanks Jo. I'm not sailing today. Winds look like they will be too light to go out

All: What happens when a shark is spotted by the plane ?. Does the plane sound a siren ?,
or are surf life savers/cops scrambled to get everybody out of the water ?
(I'm assuming the single engine plane that flys over every 20 minutes over semaphor and
Largs is spotting for sharks)
They used to circle around to let everyone know and then the local clubbies would chase it out to sea in either their rhibs or the jetboat.
I guess it's still the same.
Good to know. I think it's fanastic that plane goes over every 20 minutes or so.
Gives me a piece of mind. All the kiters are on the water and there's me bobbing
up and down like a rubber ducky 50m out trying to do his water starts :)

Where is a good fish and chip shop in Adelaide ?. I've been here 5 years now
and haven't found the "holly grail" yet. The last place I went to was a Semaphor
Fish and Chip shop in June. I ended up giving it to the bin and getting a pie across
the road.
The fish and chip shop @ Semaphore about 1/2 way between Military rd and the Esplanade on the Southern side of the road.
Mind you they changed owners about a year or so ago. just havent been in the area since.
NOW if your looking for a GREAT pie shop "the St. Peters bakery" corner of Stephen tce and 7th Ave St. Peters. ( people lined up outside the door on weekends)
PS. went to that shop and picked up some fish & chips for tea tonight not bad 7/10
Better chips at chicken chef though ![]()
Gizmo: Yeah, that's the place I went to. Pimba pub does a better job :)
legless: yeah, I reckon.
gunna: I'll have to keep that in mind when I'm down that way.
Making me hungry. I'll have to visit them after a sesh. Who said sharks are the
top of the food chain ? :)
One of my customers sons was windsurfing at semapoor one day fair way out, wind dropped on him &couldnt waterstart.so treading water........ and shark shows up and starts going round and round him inching closer and closer, got going before sharkcould read board brand or eat it and poor customer son sold alll gear never to windsurf again..nother bloke i see from time to time was waterstarting at end of henley jetty in 10 ft of water when suddenly was standing on something very solid and not his board,he still windsurfs...and nother bloke reckons he was doing 20 knots at seacliff near wave buoy and a shark swam up next to him and asked for a coke!!! 20 knots,,i thought they could only swim fast in very short bursts.
so lets keep them down the food chain and in the fishnchippery!!!
C'mon boys sharks have a place in the food chain and if there were no sharks then there would be heaps more seals which would mean less fish and then you would really piss off all the fishermen.
There are no more sharks now than there were when we were all swimming out to the blue line and not even thinking about them. I remember swimming around the outer harbour breakwaters doing bombs all day when it was hot and school holidays. Sueys off the roof of the largs jetty (try doing that now!) and henley and glenelg jetties and I have never seen one.
A couple of unfortunate incidents and now we have mass paranoia. There is the great misconception that there are more sharks now is only because there are more people looking. It is very sad to see so many people on the beach but no one in the water and all for no real reason.
By the way Sotos rocks but go the garfish
fair enough but the sharks that we have down here have no natural predators. and since they have been protected from game hunters there has to have been an increase! because thats the reason why they banned killing them! so with no natural predators and no one killing them wont there just be more and more and more big sharks????? and now fish numbers are low there coming closer to shore in search for food! BUT who cares. windsurfing is soo fun. nothing will stop me! just take your chances. its worth it. you would have to be bloody unlucky i say.
cheers chris. ![]()
What's the "blue line" ?
Same thing happened in the NT with crocs. They are not scared of people anymore.
Big Deal Shark fark, there always there, and more than likely you've sailed over at least ten of them.
ive had them come underneath my board and swim along with me out at seacliff on three different occasions.
Dont let it stop you going in the water.
The blue line is where the seagrass starts. If you look out at most beaches the colour goes from a light blue to a dark blue. That is the blue line.
before it all started to die it was about 200-400m offshore now its about 1km in some spots.
Sharks dont need natural predators when humans are killing them at an alarming rate, whetehr they are protected or not. Im not just talking about the protection of the whites, but bronzies are commercially fished. Plusd they breed so slowly that they cannot keep up.
Crocs are a different story. Cant comment my knowledge doesnt go that far...
I don't let it worry me too much, however there is caution. Admittely I don't go out more than
500 metres (i'm told sharks don't like coming too near the coast).. but if I do become a
snack like Nick Peterson (note: I spend 98% of my session in the water)... well I guess that
is hard ****.
Ja
hey i have an idea.
why dont we buy big sails and fat boy floaty slalom boards and over crowd the water ways at goolwa and milang, and never sail in the ocean.
hahah.
i reckon its more dangerous driving to semaphore for a sail then actually sailing there.
but thats my opinion
You are right joyrider. I haven't ment a shark yet. I don't know how I will react
if one had a go and I lived. We'll see anyway.. for the moment, it's stuff the sharks,
it's 18+ knot wind :)
