Hey guys,

I am looking at getting back into the sport after a good 8 years off and am looking for some gear. Am thinking a board around the 140L mark will be a good start for me as I will need to uphaul as I have not mastered the water starts quite yet. I am 85Kg and would consider myself an intermediate level beginner. Have had a look through this website, Facebook and Gumtree but have come up empty handed as my budget for a complete rig with board is around $1000. Has anyone here got any suggestions as to where I might get lucky? Or has anyone got some equipment they would consider selling? If you have any tips as to what kind of boards/ sails to look for too, please let me know.

Thanks.

Hi TB197,

The type of gear you're looking for isn't easy to come by locally.
Be careful with Gumtree - lots of really old stuff, not beginner friendly.

Put an ad in the Seabreeze 'Wanted' section - you never know when someone might get in touch. Also, check out and put a wanted in the "South Aussi Windsurfers" Facebook group...

Another Seabreeze buying tip...
If you can't find what you're looking for through filtering and the picture ads, go to the very last pages and work backwards - lots of ads get placed with no pics - especially the cheap stuff and they're always at the very end of listings.

Two boards that might suit you...

Local contacts for gear...
Ocean Surf Co - Ty: 0418 826 459
Binks Marine - Shane: 8294 6211

If you've sailed before, perhaps expand your board volume range from 120L-140L. (I'm 82kg on a 135L board and it has PLENTY of float - and could have quite easily got away with a 125L freeride board instead).
Sail type: 'Freeride' sail (no cambers) in sizing anywhere from 6m-7.5m, if going for a bigger sail, just make sure what ever boom you find fits it.

Good luck.

Hi FishMints

Do you have any experience getting boards from interstate? Price of couriers, delivery time etc. Have notice SA has very limited second hand options out there at the moment.
Thanks for the sea breeze tip, I have found plenty of cheap long boards for sale but have read many stories of handling difficulties for beginners.

Thanks for the info

From Perth - cost approx $120 through e-go.com.au so allow approx $100-$150 for the rest of Oz.
Best to organise with seller and have them arrange the freight so you don't get stung by a missed pick up for whatever reason. Search the General forum for transport threads - there's a few out there.

Nothing wrong with a 'long board' as such - its just that the older ones were also quite narrow (or narrow in comparison to 'modern' boards), making balance challenging for beginners.

I haven't dealt with 2ndwind for years, but when I did, I brought a lot of stuff off them when I was an intermediate sailor, and found them very honest to deal with. Check out their offerings below. They run a school in the Cocos Islands, and sell off old gear used from their school:
