Hello, has anyone been to Lake Goerge recently? I see it is recommended as a good spot by ONBOARD, but I wonder if there is any water left?
I used to sail down and Lake Albert but the last few trips I kept hitting bottom, I don't want to get all the way to Lake Goerge and find the same problem.
Also, is Lake George similar in conditions to Lake Albert WITH water?
sailed Lake George in December, it was bad, very bad
would not recommend a trip till we get rain
will post a pic later
That picture makes me sad.
I have many fond memories of sailing Lake George, especially when it had that weed that almost grew to the surface (going back some time admitedly!) 20 knots blowing over the top hardly created any chop, and it was there that I started to crack gybing; ugly as they were I claimed 'em!
Having said that, the lake near emptied out one summer, killed the weed (maybe sensitive to sunlight) and later filled back up again.
So hopefully it makes a comeback. It has to; it's a heritage site for flatwater sailing in SA!
S018, thank you for the picture. Worth a thousand words, most of them a bit like "empty", "dry", and "land sailing".
Choco, keep talking! I assumed lake Bonney would be empty! And I am planning a trip up to Renmark soon to help an old man with his houseboat, sounds like I should pack the board as well as the tools.
Thanks for the tip.
And Trousers, I know how you feel, I am heartbroken by Lake Albert at the moment. I used to take our old Jayco caravan down to the caravan park on the edge, set the board up on the grass in front of the van, and from there I learned everything I have learned so far (not a heck of a lot, but a lot of it went Yee Haaa!). Oh yeah, and those white round things floating on the the surface... they mean there's a fishing net in your way. Found that out the hard way.
Just came back from the caravan and 2 weeks sailing at Beachport today, ( i live 20 minutes away )the middle lake is 2 foot deep in the middle with a huge walk and you get stuck in the stinking mud, it was **** won't sail there again until winter. the only spot is on the sandhill end of the big lake in a westerly as it has a good sandy bottom and a good metre of water there. just look for where there are fishing nets as them guys don't like walking through mud either, the lake will never be like it was in the old days ever again. just sail in the bay straight out from the jetty in town as there is now a beach full off weed at surf beach. we had 5 days of cross shore westerlys after boxing day and a couple full on sea breezes the last few days, about 6 of us in the sea and another 3 guys where camping out the lake, could't believe it only seen one kite in 2 weeks, last year there where heaps of them.
