hello gals and gents, going to have the pleasure of moving to Adelaide for a couple years. I'm sure it's a common question: if I can bring two boards, what should I bring? I'm 180lbs, was thinking a 90 litre wave board and a 120 litre board with sails from 4.5 to 7.5....sound about right?
Thanks in advance!
Hi mate
Your gear selection sounds spot on.
I way 74kg and ride on a 80L and 100 boards with sail range from 3.7 to 5.3.
You are arriving at the right end of the season as we usually have a consistant seabreeze during the summer months. That said this year has had a slow start but hopefully the seabreezes should then stay aroung till the end of March.
Onboard at the bay is the local shop and they stock just about all the brands and gear you'll ever need.
Hope to see you on the water sometime

Rudy - from my perspective which will be different to a lot of others - It depends on how light you want to sail - northern seabreezes can really krank summer especially - southern seabreezes can be a little lighter and the gullies a little gusty but can be ballistic
Wave / ocean crew often have floaty freeride /freewave / wave board / freestyle 100 - 110 and a 70-90l wave board.
3.6/4.2-6ish usually covers you
Winter northerlies can krank right along the coast - a floaty wave board is handy for middleton in the cross offs.
Personally a 100l freewave board and 5.6 is the most used gear at 88kg - but I rarely pack the tent and water bag and head to the northern beaches where a smaller board would get more use - i just sail my local beach - gusty mid coast most of the time .
I'm sure you'll get some use out of whatever you bring - butthe way things have been this spring it may also get a little dusty from time to time
Enjoy the south and remember a 4/3mm wetsuit is standard during winter and boardies and a rashie are the go now
Hi Erik. Welcome to the SA forum. Everything as above. I've only been sailing two years and still learning. I mostly sail the northern beaches and can only talk about my experiences in these locations. I'm 68kg.
In winter, the wind is either one of the two extremes. My 7m sail and 115L board is used the most in winter. When it's not 7m sailing wind, it's blowing it's **** off (+30 knots). 3.7m, 4.5m etc and that's out of my experience level at the moment on the ocean. I find winter sailing very frustrating, although early winter, the northerlys are moderate and constant all day with on average one good sail a month. All other wind directions are flukey. It might be my experience level, but I just find the conditions change too frequently to enjoy myself and by the mid winter, I'm happy to do one of my other hobbies and forget windsurfing.
Summer is completely different. Normal seabreezes is 6m or 7m sails. A cranking seabreeze (normally pepped up by a southern front) is 5.3m sail. My current boards are 85L, 104L and 115L boards. My favourite board at the moment is my 104L S board with slalom fin and straps out.

Thanks for the great advice all. Sharkbiscuit, you confirmed a sneaking suspicion: Many places are either 7m or 4.5m and not much in between. I look forward to meeting some of you in the future! I can hardly wait to be somewhere I can sail year round almost! It's currently been -25 to -32 degrees c here in Canada!
