Hi guys, a few of us Warrnambool guys were thinking of road tripping over to lake George. What's the condition of the speed strip ( I guess that's what you call it) and the rest of the lake for sailing. What size fins can it handle? I hear it's getting a bit low.

Jason,

I was there a couple of weeks ago & yes it's low. I sailed from the spit to the south part of the lake & it took a while to get past the weed, although once past it...yippee! I had a 38cm (not weed) fin with a 7.5 cammed sail & as mentioned, once past the weed, no dramas.

I went back a couple of days after & tried the North side without wind, just mucking around with some mates and it's definitely deep enough, but still a bit of a walk out. There's some weed in the shallow water, but once your in about 70cm of water, there's no weed.

We'll have to organise another trip to the Loch, or Lake Linlithgow (Hamilton), it's looking good too!

Jimbob is definitely the man to talk to...he lives at Beachport & sails Lake George a lot.

Check out this from a recent sail he had with Tim (Kimba):

www.gpsteamchallenge.com.au/sailor_session/show?date=2011-04-10&team=22

Tim says the weed is around 40cms from the top and weed fins are "a must". But you can see from his Go-Pro picture, that sure does flatten out the water.

I know Jimbob's been pulling some high thirties there as the frontal weather starts to kick in.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll try to get over there in the in next couple of weeks. I haven't got a weed fin but it sounds like I'll get by, I might just need to stay away from the weed beds. If the wind picks up to 20+ knots I'll use my FreeWave with a 27cm fin.

Hey Scotty! I'll let you know when I'm heading down if you and the crew are interested. I'll also let Jimbob know. What wind directions work for the lake at the moment?

I went out in the loch a couple of days ago. Gusty as hell but still good fun. I haven't been out to the lake at Hamilton. Is it good for flat water? what wind direction.

Thanks again for the info, hopefully I'll see some of you down there some time soon.

If you sail without a weedy you will have the sh!ts in 15 minutes...............you really need a weedy if you want some flat water and speed. if not you can go out the middle of the big lake and sail in the big chop slop but you can do that there..
the water is nowhere near when you where there last Nov/Dec but is still heaps more than the last few years at this time still easily ok to sail with a weedy, I still sailed from the 5 mile drift ok last week on the speed board..
If you have a powerbox I will be able to lend you a weedy, pm me when you are looking at coming over.

Hey Trousers your well known down here (was talking to Scott)

and apparently you're a well known legend of Beachport jimbob!! I met Scott and Kelly at a BBQ a couple of weeks ago. Good people...we had a great night. If you haven't heard Scott's "why I don't drink scotch no more" story, it's well worth asking!

Hey Trousers when are you going to join in with the speed demon crew, most of the guys would be sailing with you at boggy already.

Thanks for the info Jimbob. my boards take powerbox fins so thanks heaps for the offer on the weedfins. My holidays are running out and I might struggle to get over there. I'll let you know if I end up coming over. One of the blokes from W'bool, a kiter you would have met a few times is heading over for ten days or so and is keen to get on the lake. I think he will be staying at the Beach Port Caravan Park.

Cheers.
