Sailed the new 'Granites' spot yesterday for the first time. Just north of Kingston, this spot was discovered last year and we were waiting for a dead at Robe day to give it a try.
We went to Robe and the surf was small (waist high max) and a bit on-shore. The wind was 10 - 15 knots. The coastal reports at Cape Jaffa were mid 20 knots, so we went back to Granites and checked it out.
As we arrived we were blown away by the prancing white horses. This place was solid 25 knots cross on-shore. Unfortunately not off-shore but we still went out for a blast.
It actually has a massive sand bar which acts like a reef. It picked up good surf and the waves had good separation and wonderful lips. It was easy to get some big air and the wave was good for back loops and tabletops. Although they were a good size shoulder high+ it was not knarly at all. We ripped through mega gybes on both tacks due to the 'flatness' between the ramps.
It was like a subset of coronations in terms of jumping on this SSW angle. We had an awsome time with a big air every run and a bit of fun up the line waveriding.
The spot seems like it would be awsome if it is too offshore at Robe (too easterly) and seems to pick up a bit more swell than the bay. It may also work well on a N through NW. We are certainly going to give it a go on that direction. The wave shapes seemed to imply it would provide at least a great jumping spot and I can't wait to try it in off-shore conditions. Car park has good rigging area and easy access for 'normal' cars. Also 40 minutes closer to Adelaide than Robe.
Turn off is located approx 20 kms north of Kingston and is signposted. Strongly recommend trying it out if you are in the area.![]()
sound pretty sweet mate. when i was down there it was bloody south west at 3rd ramp every day. shoulda checked it out!
I know what your talking about .A mate has a shack at the turn of and is set back behind the sand hills of the beach.Done alot of fishing there but no sailing.8 to 12 km north there are alot of sand bars and bigger waves but need good 4wd to get there.Great spot and not as far to go
