Just wondering what extension people are using with severne sails, in-particular the blade but the all have the pulleys the same? found that as the pully on the sail is 90 degress to that of NP and north that you get wierd angles on your downhaul rope? (using north power XT or NP x-combat) x-combat almost OK but rope isn't straight up down with extension pully but rather skews off and exits pully half way when you get to the last 3-4 cm. power-xt not to bad but lever can't be tucked away eaisly once downhaul applied again in the last 3-4cm? looking at aeron as they seem to be made in the same factory as severne extension which supposedly have the extension pullies lined up make downhauling a breeze... (mind you severne rdm extensions are impossible to track down which would solve the problem, right?)
Comments and suggestions appreciated?
Kristoff, PM me with your email address and I will send you a sketch of how to thread the downhaul with 90 deg pulleys.
Hi Kristof, i use the 09 Blades (and loving them
) i have been using the Aeron euro pin extension both alloy and carbon, it rigs fine and can get almost zero gap between the sail pulleys and extension pulleys.
And you can get the Aeron extensions from almost anywhere..
Below is a snap shot of the issue with the 90 degree pully
Threading so ropes don't cross over is not the issue, but rather the angle on the rope it creates when the last bit of downhaul is applied (last 2-3 centremeters) which with the blades can tune the sail alot. - image using x-combat extension
threading here is centre ... centre ... inner .... inner .... outer ... outer.. cleet
using 4 rather than 6 pulleys gets rid of the issue of the middle rope rubbing on the sails middle pulley as it exits but makes downhauling tougher on the NP extension - less pulleys = more muscle to downhaul....
the issue with the power XT which uses the 4 rather than 6 is the leaver when you finished downhauling doesn't tuck away easily because of the geometry of the ropes and you find your self trying to twist the extension a little to get the leaver to tuck away after you apply you downhaul. - will post photo when I rig up next using power xt - apart from that the power xt gets rid of the downhauling muscle required and allows you to tune on the water etc, which with the blades is great because as I have found they have large tuneablde wind range..
and well then there is the other problem that so many people face with the power xt which is the rope slipping from time to time when you rig up, but that is another issue in itself which has been discussed many times before and not the issue here.....
I'll try rigging with the aeron or similar at some stage to see if its any easier to get the last bit of downhaul... seems it might be the option....
Go to the Maui Sails site. Download the rigging Guide Pdf from the TR5 sail page. it shows exactly how to thread for a 90 deg pulley setup. It was Phil McGain that showed me how to do it years ago.
dont go for zero gap on your wavesail downhaul - personally i find the whole rig loosens up in the turns if you leave about 7cm of gap.
Seriously - everytime i borrow a rig pulled all the way down the mast foot just catches in the water (on hard pushed bottom turns) and i trip and bog rails -
give it a go and see for yourself..
Jason Polakow was doing this some time ago.
A couple of weeks ago Mr Reflex tried out my rig and suggested I increase the gap, so I increased my extention by 3 holes re downhauled and believe it or not when I did this the board had a looser feel to it. Still not sure why this works.![]()
