it may be an oxymoron for me to review a freestyle fin but as myself and others have been asking about choco fins and not gotten much info i thought i'd review my latest fin purchase.
as an extremely average sailor i figured that this fin would suit me. the choco website describes it as an early planing fin for lakes and light wind conditions and old school manoeuvre. - exactly what i am after.
i couldn't buy this fin in australia so i bought it from the UK.
the fin looks awesome! and the white fin sleeve is slick, first fitting into the box and it finished flush with the underside of the board and screwed in first go also. the finish quality of the fin is top notch.
on the water i am comparing this to a 07 MFC freestyle pro (old shape) which may not be fair as the new mfc freestyle pro is a different shape.
the choco has a great top end for a thick short and wide fin, it's better than the 07 mfc i had but off the mark the 07 mfc had more grunt. in reality it's not really a problem as the choco gets up to speed well and is only marginally slower off the mark.
upwind - the choco is great, it powers along and you can load it up so people that are heavy footed like me will like it. the mfc was also very good to windward but i think the choco may just be a little better. it's hard to tell.
off the wind - the choco had great speed, more than the 07 mfc.
jumping - take offs no probs. plenty of fin to kick against, if you mess the landing or push to much on the back foot the choco will let go and want to do 360's, the 07 mfc was a little more grippy on the landings.
tracking - no problems here with either fin. the choco feels more slippery probably a little more comfortable. both fins very reliable.
spinout - both fins don't spinout unless pushed. the mfc however could be brought back into line if i did manage to spinout. the choco takes a little more work. so i guess being a freestyle fin the choco is a little better there but for me i do like a fin that can be pulled back into line for grip when required. the good thing about the mfc was in bay waves i could slide across the top of the wave and then staighten and grip and go down the face.
tricks - well i'll let you know one day.
still trying and only early days. i got the choco as i figured it was a great fin for a heavy guy in light winds and would assist me. luckilly this is exactly what the fin is like and it is exactly as described on the choco website. even for blasting it feels really smooth and gave me lots of confidence, planed very early and had good speed for a short and wide freestyle fin.
very happy and keen to try the laterst mfc freestyle pro as all of my mfc fins are very slick fins.
Glad to hear you like the choco fin. We are a choco fins dealer, here in west australia. If you need any more chocos let know ,we can send them .
cheers gspot xtreme
hi gspot,
it was unfortunate that you didn't stock the 24cm royal flush back when i first started looking. would of certainly been faster to have gotten it direct from your shop. on a side note, what's the go with your new website? choco fins aren't listed anymore?
do you have any chocos in stock at the moment?
