What is your favourite sail
and/or your worst sail
you've had.
Brand and model and why
Obviously things like performance, durability and value for money would be some of the reasons why they are chosen by you
.
severne sails... they match or exceed the performance of all the other main brands, whilst being half a kilo lighter. S-1 and SWATs. Also cheaper, especially the SWATs. No issues with durability so far.
Have had NP, North and Simmer wavesails previously, they were all pretty good as well.
This will end up being a shirtfight, but anyway. I've had Pryde, Gaastra, North, Ezzy and now Severne. I was really happy with the North, Ezzy's and now the Severne's, NP and gaastra not so much.
Back when I had North I had DrX's and this was Norths best era I reckon until maybe recently. Those sails; DrX, Voodoo, Superstar were all fantastic sails, they looked the business and performed perfectly.
Then I moved onto Ezzy basically on a price/performance basis. In my opinion they make the strongest sails money can buy and until the last few years were also some of the cheapest. They set and sail quite differently to most other sails so many people don't like them but if you want something SUPER stable and absolutely bomb proof you can't go past them.
More recently in my attempts to master a bit more freestyle I wanted a sail that went a bit more 'neutral' and was lighter so I got some Severne SWAT's. Can't fault them, they are insanely light, probably the cheapest 'premium' sail on the market and seem pretty tough; nothing on an Ezzy though imo.
End of the day I think most companies these days make a good product and it's fairly hard to go wrong. I'm a bit of a Severne fan at the moment because they really seem to be pushing that light weight/strength ratio hard...and it's working.
Note: all my sails are wave/freestyle so I'm only commenting on that area; slalom sails etc as I have nfi :)
I am at my second year of windsurfing and I have only second hand sails, Neil Pryde and North. I personally freak out for anything branded North Sail but I found Neil Pryde to be more reliable and resistent, especially on the long term.
About the price, of course, if you buy NS you pay also the brand, something that NP does not.
My two cents.
Not the blitz and bing of my quiver but my favorite is in fact 2005 11 meter Severne.
Magical sailing in its wind range and at the top end I know its time to go to my 7.8m Loft Blade which is clocking up the hours and mileage, being the most used in my quiver.
Sometimes it is just an individual sail.
I once had all Gaastra sails and the 5.8 Course slalom I always had a terrible time with. It was the same model as the 6.2 I always had a lovely time with. I also had a 5m in a different model that I loved. I still can't explain it. Everytime I used that 5.8 sail I got catapulted, had difficulty waterstarting, ended up a long way down wind. I'd have done better to stay home.
I now have a 5.8 Koncept and everyone knows that's my favourite sail now. Same size, totally different outcome!
Favourite sail......A Gasstra MC2X from years ago....I remember having a great time with a 5.7m - the one with adjustable cams. Super light and easy to use. However my current point 7 is pretty damn good!
Worst one.....a Wild Winds race sail.....big baggy thing that I brought second hand that did not last long. Modern gear is soooo much better.
Used to live for the closeout sails at goodtime when I was at uni and thought crap..I better go in an buy that discounted NP MK4 before anyone else gets them! Where was freestyle then!
Started with north then Np and now slowly moving over to Severne. Loved the np 2006-2009 sails havent been to impressed with the quality of them after that hence the move to serverne.
a recent magazine sail test in which Severne participated confounded the testers
one of the complete Severne S1 rigs - with enigma boom , redline mast / grenade base
was lighter than one of the (un named) other brands sail only (in the same size) !
And yet this rig / sail combo will match just about anything on the market for durability.
Thats progression.
Also worth noting that Severne actually develop new sail materials with the producers of these raw materials - something that very few other sail brands do - ( i think Pryde are the next closes for sail material development -and i absolutely love some of their colors!)
this is a crucial part of the weight / durability progression
AS far as racing is concerned If you want to be fast / competitive you need to be on one of the fastest designs in the market.
This is why we are seeing more riders avoid sail sponsorship so they can choose sail performance - they pay for their sails - but have a more successful career because they are getting results. This gives them the flexibility to move (or stay) brands to follow the performance
The Severne Reflex Programme has delivered awesome results - across both Larger sailors like Bjorn as well as more human sized racers like Steve Allen
This has been done with some very clever and progressive sail design / cam reinvention / sail tensioning that is quite technical - but is all on display here:http://www.reflexfilmsaustralia.com.au/Reflex_Films_Australia/THE_VIDEO_PAGE.html
So - for now - its great to see an Aussie sail brand kicking it on the world tour-
now it would be great to more aussie representation on the tour - as in years gone by - as it seems there are few Aussies killing on tour compared to when Pozza, Scotty, Grubby, Phil Mcgain etc etc used to represent on the podium.
Fav: Loft Blade 7.0 2011 - absolute bliss + I don't mind my 2010 8.8 Code Red for light wind sailing.
Never had a really bad sail either although the old Aerotech VMG's had more cams than a camel has fleas even though the sail had very little draft in it. They were fairly bullet proof though.
Retro 6.5 (2003?) - the worst experience I had. Severne Gator 7.5 - the best ever sail (be aware of incompatible masts, NP in particular!). Just an amazing sail! Soft, stable, light, very well balanced. I use it from 10knt to maybe 20knt or more - really controllable. "Oldy" NP Streetracer 7.0 was my first one and I really loved it too. Also have North 5.3 (really old), Ezzy 6.6, NP V6, Simmer 4.7, Severne Blade 5.3, another Severne Gator 6.5
... Severne - the best!
Favorite would be a toss up between 1998 NP 5.3 MPR and my current 5.3, a 2008 KA Koyote. MPR was a brilliant all-round sail that worked great on same downhaul/outhaul setting every time I used it, though durability was not good (particularly upper leech). 5.3 Koyote would probably win, great bottom end with excellent strong wind handling to boot, plus durability of full x-ply.
Worst would be a mylar DeVries 6.0 (made in France) that I brought from, if I remember rightly, Rose Bay Sailboards in Sydney in the mid eighties, back in the days when there not many brands of 'aftermarket' sails available (most sails came with the boards).
Funny when thinking about the worst sail I've had and the name DeVries sort of came up. A heavy sail with no shape and no redeeming features.
I have very fond memories of a year 2000 SB carve 99 rigged with a North Disco 5.9m a few years ago.
It was the combo of the season many summers ago in the UK south coast.
1990 Simmer Style Wave 3.5 ... that sail kicked ass sailing in 35 ktn+ places like South of France, Gorge, Mexico...
1994 Tiga Wave 5.0 / 4.5 ... those where ultra light sails made by Neil Pryde for Tiga. Lasted nearly 5 years.
2000 5.3 Neil Pryde Zone ... Man I loved that sail... sadly I killed it in 2005.
2009 Neil Pryde Alpha ... that was the year the Alphas hit the spot.
2011 5.8 Neil Pryde Atlas... Neil Pryde finally manage to make a sail over 5.5 that doesn't weigh a ton. Great performance and it rigs on a 400 mast. My new favourite.
Sails I didn't like so much... Never liked the feel of the Gaastras and Naish sails. I think it comes down to the fact that those sails are not made for heavy weigths. Especially the Gaastra sails always seemed to soft for my liking.
I have tried the Ezzy's as well and they felt nice.
As far as durability goes I think it always comes down to how you treat your gear. Some people are meticulous ... others treat it like s..t. Don't expect it to last too long if you do the later.
2008 Naish Session 4.2
About to get my new Session - love those sails - light and soft, am a light weight.
Other sails I have sailed NP, Simmer, Ezzy, KA. None of these compare in "lightness" and softness to the Naish Session.
I met some folks that keep logs of their sailing e.g. how many times they rig a sail, how many times they use their downhaul rope, etc. ... and they said most sails will rig approx 120 time before they start to look tired.
I mostly sail with large slalom sails and I found Ezzy Ifinitys my match made in heaven
They're fast, easy to rig but most importantly durable
I've been using the same 9.5 since early 2000s not sure which year and it gets a lot of use
I've only done one sticky back repair to it and used it yesterday and it still goes as good as the first time I used it
I also have a 6.5/7.5/8.5 which are 2006/2007 and they all go great
I'm an XPLY convert and won't buy a sail not made of it
Still for the right price I'd have no problem buying a North sail or any other brand made of XPLY ![]()
I love my Maui Sails.
TR-4 6.3, TR-5 5.9, 6.6 and 7.6, TR-6 6.3, 7.0, 7.6 and 8.4. Each of those is so nicely performing that I would have a tough time to tell which is best (apart from obvious year to year evolution). I don't test different sails often, but every time I did (Gaastra Vapor 7.9 '11, NP RS:R Evo II 8.6, Point-7 AC-1 7.7 '09 and 7.9 '10, Challenger Sails Aero 7.1 and 7.9 '11), I got the idea that Maui Sails is quite a few steps ahead of them.
I also have to mention my old Simmer Style SC-4 6.6 and SC-5 6.6 (the one in my avatar) and 6.9, that I kept using for a long time.
As for my worst sail, I would mention a Neil Pryde RS:3 7.5 that was quite a delusion, considering its high price and my expectations. Far worse than the much older Simmers, by performances, workmanship, design and sailing feel.
My worst experience was rigging my NP RS 6.2 on the wrong must. I thought it set ok until my first gybe when I heard a big crack. I had put too much downhaul tension on and the mast snapped at the join. I was quite away from land but was lucky enough to grovel in before the whole rig collapsed on me.
Duely noted that the specs say X9 100% carbon. Sold the sail the next day and invested in some Simmers.
Favorite sail is probably Neil Pryde Zone 5.3 2001 model especially when used with my 80L wave board. Sweet handling and plenty of wind range. Love it. Still in use.
2nd favorite would be 4.7 NP Zone same vintage. Only used on windy weekends. Perfect condition.
3rd is my 6.5 NP V8 2008 model.
Used to have North Slalom 6.5 late '80s sail and it was very good too. Durable and powerful but a bit heavy. Traded this in on some Gaastra Slalom Sails in the early to mid '90s and they were good as well. Lighter than the North but still very nice. Kept these till mid 2000's when I changed all my slalom sails to NP. I like them.
Worst by far was a De Vries 5.7 wave sail I had in mid-late '80s which looked colourful but sailed poorly. Got rid of it and the Ten Cate Leaper board with a boom, mast, base etc to a bloke for $200. I made a loss on the deal but was glad to get rid of it; he thought he got a bargain. ![]()
