Anyone sailing either the simmer quantum or cortex in WA conditions regularly? I'm looking for a new 85l board which likes onshore, can handle holes in the wind for a 80kg and is playful to the point it encourages trying silly fun stuff. Was going to get a jp slate but reading the English reviews the simmers sound suitable.
I have a V3 85L Quantum and I REALLY like it. At 88kg (plus a lot of neoprene) it's my high wind board which I use for everything from onshore/b&j to side shore DTL. Responds to fin tuning really well to cover many conditions.
The construction is excellent too with double footstrap inserts and CF slot boxes. I've had to repair a few chips but the newer ones use an epoxy hot coat which should be really durable.
Im also curious about the characteristics cortex Vs. Quantum. Which one is best for 5.7 wavesailing, cortex 99 or quantum 105? Will c99 60 cm width carry a 5.7 with ease?
Not in WA but rode a78 lit. V1 coretex for a half day fully powered on a 4.7, fun board but you have to get used to short length you can stuff the nose if you don't pay attention. used to own 85 quantum a good do it all board quick to plane very versatile my $$$ would go to the quantum. Bubbas I would think a 99 lit 60cm wide should easy carry a 5.7
My 85L Quantum holds a 5.2 comfortably. Big range on that board, its happy down to 4.0
I'm sure the 105L would be just perfect with a 5.7
I've sailed the 105, 115 Quantum's and the 99 Cortex. I'm about 105kgs and ride mainly DTL XOff conditions with some B & J and lake sailing thrown in there. For float and ride the 115 and 5.6 are my go to setup, The 105 was just as happy with a 5.6 on it. Great all round wave board, I prefer the thruster setup for DTL as it allows me to keep the speed through a tight bottom turn into vertical for that late cutback I like. When the winds up (powered 5.0) I love the 99 Cortex, it's so agile and feels smaller then 99. Works perfectly well DTL (I run quad setup), Quick to get going but loves to turn but it's aggressive...You need to be ready to snap the tail back or you'll spin round 360. I sail the Cortex on lake Illawarra (can be 40-50knots) over winter with a 4.2 and it's quite a good blaster. I wish they made it in a 105 so I could use it more as it's a really fun ride. Rumor has it the'll be dropping a 100ish flywave so if that happens I'll be a very happy wavesailor.
Cheers J.
Thanks for sharing your experiences. It sounds like the cortex 99 feels a bit smaller than the volume suggests, compared to the Quantum 105, and that it may be a bit small for a 5.7. At the same time, the cortex seems like a much more exiting and fun board for wavesailing. And maybe its ok for me with a 5.7 as I weigh about 20 kg less than you... A flywave around 105 liters would be perfect!
