This S1 review from Windsurf UK - sept 06
S1s are very popular here in the west. The S1 is Mr Severne's concept wavesail - the one that Severne tend to experiment with new materials, fittings and shaping - before they migrate to other models in the range.
On closer inspection, the S1's build quality and detailing is excellent, using high quality x-ply in all its panels bar the main window, and using an alternating batten configuration so as to promote symmetry in the sail between tacks.
Ride and Handling
Very light and balanced in the hands at rest, the S1 powers quickly and accelerates like a scalded cat as soon as there is enough wind. Sharp and precise, it has a very crisp reactive character due to the high skin tension and x-ply content, making for a very lively involving ride. The clew is placed relatively high and encourages the rider into an upright stance over the board -an ideal position from which to start any manoeuvre. In straight line blasting mode the feel of the sail is electric, powering through lulls well, and translating gusts efficiently into extra acceleration. In severe gusts, the mid-leech does begin to billow slightly, although it doesn't seem to affect the sail's stability. It's in transition that you really begin to understand what the S1 is all about however, its light responsive character and instantaneous power combining to make it a dream to use. Drop it into the pit of a wave and it pulls the rider into the perfect dedicated position, the balanced power driving the board right through the bottom turn with the capacity for easy reposition for the cutback. Happy in any wave environment and complimenting any riding style with its manners, the S1 has been reborn into a high performing all-rounder.
Plus: Acceleration, light responsive feel and impeccable handling over wide wind range.
Minus: For use with a RDM only.
- The S1 has taken a large leap forward for 2007, combining a precise crisp power delivery with an electric responsive feel. As such, it comes well recommended for any manoeuvre-oriented sailor, particularly those looking for a sail to a excel in any wave environment
