Hi Guys, I'm thinking about buying one of these in 150-190cm. So Enigma 150-190 or Duotone Platinum mega Slim 150-190 both 2020.. Looks like Severne went a bit squarish in their clue, which may/may not cause some uneven force distribution. Which one would you get?
I have a old Aeron carbon 145 to 185 from memory that i fixed with araldite to 170 cms for my 5m sails.
Including harness lines it weighs 2.4 kgs.
Fixed booms are a lot stiffer as there is no play between the boom and extension.
Its only 300g lighter than my North Aero Platinum 190-250 but it feels so much lighter as booms feel heavier when they are extended due to increasing the swing weight.
Another reason i dislike big sails.
The longest i ever extend my North boom is to 205cms.

I have a previous model Enigma 140-190 and a Platinum Aero 140-190.
No harness line markings on the North boom. I think the grip is flimsier. (Maybe Severne is the same, but the camo pattern hides this well). Both have very loose heads after a while (electric tape for the win). You can see circular grooves made in the carbon by the North head.
North plastics are brittle. The plastic outhaul bit on my boom cracked. I've seen multiple North extensions with cracked plastic parts. Severne plastics feel "cushier", more rubbery.
Tldr; buy whatever is cheaper.
North had an issue with grip glue a few years back
skinny bends too much. For me, the nice feel isn't worth the flex trade off

1. Long time ago and not relevant now
2. If you suffer forearm fatigue, I would rather be sailing with a skinny, rather than sitting on the beach with a standard diameter boom.
I wouldn't worry about the "square" back end. Yet to hear of a breakage and i've seen them cope with quite a lot of load. Pretty sure theyve built in enough curvature and carbon for them to not get pulled apart prematurely
I can't comment on the build quality of the duotone since i've not sailed with one. but looking at the head, colours and labeling aside, it doesn't look any different to the head on my old north that i bought 2nd hand 9 yrs ago. Its flimsy looking, but its still going strong.
One of them is 25mm diameter, the other one's 24mm diameter, not really a difference worth considering there... i think Faff said it best. Which ever one is cheapest.
I've broken two Severne Enigma booms. First one was a 140-190 extended to 184 that broke sailing in a straight line. Severne replaced it under warranty.
The second one broke going over the falls on a wave. That was not replaced under warranty. I've replaced it with an S2 Maui boom as it was more than US$100 cheaper and seems well built.

S2 Maui looks nice. I like 140-200 range. Cannot find any real world pictures online. Does it have 2 pin buckle?
Can't comment about "small" but i have good experience with mid and big slalom sizes.
Carbon:
1 x early Tecnolimits (still there), 3 x NP x9 (1 still there, 2 no longer there for nothing regarding windsurf), MS (no longer there for nothing regarding windsurf), 3 x North (2 still there, 1 no longer there because i smashed it during a match ribs vs wide carbon tube close to boom head...).
All of them good products but i was impressed first time i got the MS. Now i pretty much use 90% of the times North and i'm super satisfied about them (despite friends early model got some tube problems and boom head wasn't the best).
Curious about the other "family" (Avanti/P7/Simmer/S2/Loft). A slightly different shape (more powerful?)...
p.s. I use 2 x north with NO GRIP. Just a tiny tape on the tubes. This drastically reduces the diametre and dramatically increase the last and fun of TOW....
Maybe Philn can post some pics of S2Maui boom so we can see it better. Isn't it ironic that I cannot find good pictures online.. :)
I've had 1 x Maui sails 150-200 carbon, 2 x severne enigma (previous design) 150-200, now chinook RDG, 150-200 carbon. It's my favourite for build quality, Strength, weight, slim grip, head design, loop and go set up. The grip material has seams and isn't the same durable quality as the severne though, it seams to be tougher.
The new Severne, Chinook RDG, and Duotone Carbon, all brilliant carbon wave booms, in my opinion.
Probably comes down to availability, price and Personel preference. Just my 2 cents.I'm 90 kgs, wave sail in heavy beach breaks, ride big wave sails 5.8 m sometimes, and love the skinning carbon booms for strength and comfortable grip compared to the big diameter booms of old.
Streamline has also up date their carbon wave booms to slim line, maybe worth a look?
Having to select from these two, I would definatley go for the enigma. Period
I've seen a lot of busted Enigmas. Probably because everyone here has one (including myself). I think many here have an NP X9 and I've never heard of them break. But they are not skinny or light (carbon head though).

I have the Chinook RDG 170-220 carbon boom. I agree on everything you say about design, weight, etc. When I saw it for the first time I was super impressed with it. It looks really good. However after riding it for a year on my 2 biggest sails (6.7 with 192 cm boom and 7.5 with 204 cm boom), I'm no longer impressed. My Enigma 140 to 190 boom was stiffer at 184 cm with my 6.3 than the Chinook is with only 14 cm extension on the same sail.
Elsewhere I've seen the Chinook RDG booms described as aluminum stiffness for a carbon price, and I couldn't agree more.

didnt really answer the question (pete is that you ?)
Also consider the AL360 Carbon Slim. AL360's have better build quality and components compared to the brands that are made in Asia.

I love my AL360 wave carbon slim .. but there is no way that you can say that the quality of the components is a better build quality ... the carbon arms seem ok but the quality of the fittings both look and feel very cheap .. the booms clips have cracked but are still working ok, the head is ok, the tail-end didn't have a loop'n'go setup, so I replaced with north tailend fitting.
when you need replacement parts & spares for AL360, then buy from here .... easy shipping to Australia ..

Have had Fiberspar, Chinook, Severne Enigma and NP X9 booms. Not saying the quality is on another level but my AL360 booms have far less play, squeeks, sounds, snapped clips and wear on the tail piece compared to the other brands I've used.
Having a AL360 wave carbon slim for about 7 years as my only boom now and do not understand the partly negative comments about the quality of the plastic parts. I generally like the severne products very much and have been using the S1 sails, masts and extensions for years, but when it comes to the boom, the more expensive enigma is currently not an option for me when it comes to booms. The Al360 clip must always be closed then it also does not wear out and break at some point. Regarding Jakes comment I would never ever use a loop?n go setup on a wave sail because especially by using quite low tension on the outhaul the rope on the boom can come loose from the clamp during wipe outs. A shop in Pozo is using this boom for 3-4 seasons with 150+ surf days a year (rental) and I haven?t heard so far that any AL360 boom was broken during normal use. From my personal view I would always choose the bigger diameter when I?m a heavy guy. Every Al360 part is available as spare part and for the durability the boom is compared to other booms relative cheap.
2 and a bit years on and I'm still loving the Chinook RDG Carbon boom. Still rock solid and no issues with any of the components - I highly rate them. Here is a link to my original review

I use 3 of different sizes of Enigma Carbon Booms and I like them a lot. I had a windsurf session in November 2020 with a 150-200 2019 model year boom (my smallest one) and after I landed after a jump I felt/heard a little "crack" and then noticed that one hand of the boom is bended. I came back ashore, derigged the sail and found that it was boken (after I took out the tail of the boom).
More than 1 year had passed from the moment of purchase (official warranty as I know) but I am just a 65kg rider surfing in bump&jump conditions, never doing any freestyle moves at all. So I wrote to the retailer in Germany I bought it from (Puresports-Schumacher) and described the situation hoping for the best.
And after some time they told me that they have passed this info to the Severne and as a result I will have new model of this boom in the same size as soon as they will start getting them from the Severne!
So I am totally happy with the policy of the Severne so far and will stay with them further on :)
It is now my third year on the goya super skinny boom /wide tail end/. Lots of bashing,no problems whatsoever. The latest 2021 incarnation is with even a tad thinner grip imho. My 130-180 with harness lines weighs 2.05 kg.
The Chinook booms according to this link are very light.

I have been using an Enigma 150-190 since, I think, 2015 and it works great for me (I am 72Kg). I only wish it had a bit wider tail (so that larger sails have less chance to touch the boom), but I think the 2021 has. I will probably go back to Severne when I feel like a need a replacement. I have always been curious about X-booms x-booms.com/ and I might go there next time around, and there is the new kind on the block Lisa that does not have a wave boom yet but probably will and seems the most thought through lisawindsurfing.com/

Those LISA booms look awesome, especially the Twist Lock Pulley system
I took the clips off my Platinum boom to save 200g and now use duct tape.
Problem is the boom slowly slips reducing in length and i end up with a little more negative than i need ![]()
Duotone has 140 mm tail end Severne has increased tail end length from 90 mm (previous model) to 110 mm .I have the previous enigma with the 9 and my bigger sails 5.7 touches the boom I think 11 is fine for wave riding On the contrary 140 is too much maybe for bigger sails and freeride.
New enigma tail end was a huge improvement imo .... I think its enabled me another level of bottom end on my severnes ... by rigging 2 clicks less than recommended boom length ... you still end up putting on say 1-2 cm of positive outhaul ... but sail sets super full WITHOUT smashing the boom arms ... New enigma's (and older ones) are amazing ... well worth the money ... have never let me down ...
Have the Platinum, Enigma and Naish in the size to app 220 each. Happy with each. Platinum- lightest, less hand fatigue then the Enigma but soft grip wears easily.
Enigma- 100g heavier, nice grip.
Naish- app 500g heavier, stiffest, bulletproof grip, which actually, though quite robust, is easy on hands as less pressure needed to grip. I believe the Naish will be the last one standing and may never need regripping. The weight is it's only downside.
see if someone has one and ask for a quick run on the rig... you will form an opinion quickly.
