this is the main reason my friend sailing a lot Mauritius changed all his s1 pros to new Goyas(excellent sails but a little heavy compared to severne) and New North(very light but very flat no low-end range at all) IHO . fortunately, he didn't go for 2023.

When you are drifting around in the ocean the colour of your sail makes little to no difference in regards to being spotted from a boat. If it is safety you are concerned about you should have a flare with you.

I'm asking a serious question - playing the devils' advocate - I dont have any experience whatsoever at sea-rescue.

I assume that coloured sails are easier to see because they are standing up. If not standing up, then anything which isn't a similar colour as white or blue, is more visible. May I ask what experience do you draw on to make that statement?

From a helicopter it might make a small difference. When you are drifting in the water and rescue comes from a boat it makes little or no difference. A colourful sail is not a safety device!

There is a reason why long distance windsurf, SUP, kite races require you to carry an emergency flare. A helicopter search and rescue crew can spot a flare as far away as 4 kms depending on sea conditions regardless of what the ambient light does. For them to spot your sail drifting in the ocean the have to be within a few hundred meters of range.

As for a place like Mauritius. I assume the friend is talking about being caught out at the reef with wind suddenly dying. If none on the beach knows you are out there my advice would be ditch the rig, tie the board to yourself and start paddling.

Having a brightly colored sail will drastically increase visibility when sailing. In other words less probability of being hit by powerboats, or other fast moving vessels.

What are power boats doing on the surf!

Looks pretty sweet, flash back to the first combat waves of the early 90's.

We had a local sailing buddy get caught out as the sun went down a while back. Short story, water safety/coast guard was called in for the hunt, all ended well. Their one bit of advice was to wear something reflective on you body, it's the best way to find something on the water day or night. They don't give a toss about your gear, particularly when it gets sketchy. Makes sense if you get seperated from your kit.

In the standard S1s and standard Blades, I like the new red and antracite ones - now with the stripey seams for 2023.

That site suggests you can pre order but they aren't actually in stock yet. I'm hearing they are due in next month.

it certainly appeals like it but it is already implemented for some years now. Maybe it got longer but so far I miss the actual specs to compare.
Maybe we have something incoming end this month or beginning of next month.

I hope Severne is able to sell their sails in 23. I'm riding Severne since 2013 but the new prices for the wave collection are ridiculous. I'm out! Next range will be something else.

I sailed on ships for 10 years. In most cases it is not easy to spot a sailing yacht. Yes in force 1-2 wind with no swell and nice sunny weather you spot them from 3-4 miles away but in force 5 with some waves it becomes much less. Besides most officers will look at their screens more often nowadays (radar / electronic charts / freaking iphone) so chances go down even more. Extra lookouts only at nights.
Without light in the night you have zero chances.
So no chance for you standing on your board and waving.
If the coastguard comes to search specifically for you then yes you have more chances.
To be safe I agree to take a flare, and would like to add another device. You can get a Personal locator beacons (PLBs).
www.yachtingworld.com/features/epirbs-plbs-and-man-overboard-aids-62213

These are the best. Mandatory for work on deck in offshore for all crew. They are small and you when you activate them they send a signal to a rescue center with your position included in the signal. Signal is send via satellites.
They will also appear on rader/ais/digital charts of passing merchant ship. They are very clear and will be picked up 100%.

In the UK a 2022 Blade 5.3m was GBP 785, for 2023 its 889. Due to shipping costs, the state of our currency and inflation rate of 11.1%.
Hopefully everyone else is faring better.

ps a 2021 was also 785, so that takes the edge off the price hike this year if they didnt go up last year.

Nice to see slightly longer lengths again. After trying shorter lengths the last 5 years I've decided I prefer a slightly longer length.
