I'm getting back into sailing after a 19 year kite surfing stint. The boards and gear have changed massively since my strapper rocket and NP world cups.
I'm looking to get back into ocean sailing, not so much wave sailing, but ocean bump and jump blasting. I'd like to be be going in lighter air so I can still kite on my surfboard when its 22 plus.
With the new shapes has volume requirements changed? I'm 95kg and used to sail a 115L in just about everything. I'm looking at second hand 110L-120L freeride boards that can carry up to a 7.5m - 8m sail for light days. Does that sound too low volume for my size? to allow a 10 knot grovel if wind drops out and dare I suggest a knee deep uphaul if needed??? I'm ok SUP surfing on a 115L 8"6 . But obviously no rig etc..

I'm the same weight, Fox 140 or 120. Easy to sail,fast and fun, both take a 8.6.
140 easy to sail home if wind dies, works from 12 to 20knots
120 you won't be knee deep but it won't be fun if the wind dies.
^ yeah +1 for the severne fox 120 got one for queensland sailing and so far love the soft fast ride the board gives
For open ocean, Windtech 72 is pure joy, IMHO the extra length and ATT make it a clear winner over the Fox
All good advice
But one thing- the new stuff is so good you will soon forget this idea of kiting once it gets over 22kn.

Or if you're still young and flexible enough to crash at over 30knots go for ultimate blasting potential and get a foil for under your kite board.

First of all, cool that you are looking at windsurfing again.

More than one way to enjoy the ocean and you won't need as big a sail.
(And, yes, the new stuff is way better :) )
May I ask why windsurf in lighter wind and kite in stronger wind? The guys I know who do both, usually do the opposite. Granted they are usually windsurfers who don't want to use big rigs anymore and prefer windsurfing in general. Some have dropped kiting for windfoiling.

Ian I actually used to do a bit of kite foiling, had a ex world cup KFA. . . . put the thing through my knee joint. emergency surgery, 46 stitches and my knee is forever rooted. . .my foiling days are over. .
Thanks for the tips. I picked up a JP excite Ride 120L and a 7.3 NP twin Cam to get me underway . . . already buying better fins etc. . .the bug is back.

Faff I'm looking to just enjoy sailing again .. just chill out and do some bump and jump . .cruise. I remember old days out off Wambi beach in 18 knots on slalom kit in 2m seas. . .such a hoot. big old rocket airs : ) I like wave riding on my kite, just so I can surf my standard short board. . park the kite and whack it, I find it actually improves my surfing.
