Does some one of you ever try compare race sail against freeride sail in pure speed?
We all know that cam sails have better stability, accelaration, breath when gust hits etc etc.. but does race sail is really faster in straight line than freeride sail?
As much "horspower" your sail has ,your are allways limited with your weight,so sail can not produce more "thrust" if your weight do not allow this....
same board, same fin, same weight, same skill, race in straight line -and does race sail will be faster than freeride?
If does, how much,1knots?
I done a test last January .6.0 cheetah vs 6.0 lion ,I know the lions not full race ,but good as .
the lion had better top end and more grunt .the cheetah you could dumb power quicker and make more mistakes .
but yes lion with cams is faster .1 knot you say ..nah more ..I found you where at top speed when the big gusts hit ,that's what you use to head down wind ,to hit your top speed .
But I like my cheetahs .its easy .and still fast.and nice in chop .
Problem is you can't compair cam vs no cam that way.
you can compair race sail vs free ride but is the performance coming from the cams or the overall sail design.
dude - the racers are NOT human
saw young French slalom racer in Montreal rig a TR 8.4 with 4 cambers in 20 knot winds
asked him "what the heck"
his reply ? "voyons donc Joe - c'est juste 20 noeuds"
translated - c'mon joe - it's ONLY 20 knots
WTF !!!
even with my 200+ pounds I would have been out on a 7 meter sail at most
I think for most of us the fastest sails are the ones we can handle best. Unless you are really sharp with sail handling a freerace type sail ( eg Overdrive, Vector, S-type) will be quicker than a full race sail at least for 1hr, 500m, and alpha, if not 2second peak, and this will be more pronounced the rougher the water.
If if your sailing skills are really good then full on race sails do offer another level of performance, but lots of us are better off one notch down I think.
So you need to match up your skill level, the water state you'll be sailing in, and what your goal is. Most of us will end up on a freerace sail when you put that all together.
My 2c
I would say race sails are more stable and faster if you have the ability to use the extra power in the gusts. Otherwise a freeride is lighter and easier to waterstart for average sailors. I have both Koncepts and KARace sails, use the race sails in the larger size to get more bottom end power. If its windy and choppy it's easier for me with the Koncepts.

it's not an apples with apples comparison. more than just the cams create a sail. aspect ratio, leach tension, mast bend curve all make big differences.
look at the KA Koyote, pretty sure that's done over 40 knots. it has no cams.
