A few pics of the Evo 3 from Brasil with a brief review from Wilhelm about it's performance after the Brasil Nationals where he got 2nd to Gabriel Browne.
"The new sail is awesome. here at the event we had one day with light winds on the limits, everyone was on 12s and I was on 10.7 since I did not get the 12 yet. The sail performed brilliantly in all conditions, in stronger winds it also feels super stable and easy. I had several races where I was leading but messed up and ended up in second, so I am super happy with the sail.
I am sure you will like it."
Sam.
Indeed, It looks like NP have taken arguably the best race sail of the last 5 years, refined it, reduced the luff curve (hopefully, to match the Evo II?), put in a new clew and picked some new colours.
It should be a massive success then!
Hopefully we will see one on the racecourse soon.

Will the new sails be this colour? for some reason I thought they had a huge NP logo on the top 1/3rd of the sail?
Have they done away with the black monofilm that was UV resistant?
I hope not i believe it really helped the sails durability, especially in places like Australia?
Actually BRA-50 sails look brand new?
Sails look great.
No fault, I just found it remarkable that Gabriel was using the RS6 and that the EVOIII looks so similar to this sail and different than the EVOII. Gabriel is a former MauiSails teamrider and I also sail with MauiSails. Of course this is just evolution and taking the best design forward.
Hi Brett,
Pretty sure the new graphic will look like this just a little taller.
Hi Mark,
No stress. Kind of makes you wonder if Gabriel may be involved with development in some level since leaving Maui Sails. Someone should sign him up fast as he must be amazingly talented to beat guys of the standard of Steve Allen, Paulo and Wilhelm with some ease and consistency at the moment.
Cheers,
Sam.
Word on the Street is the top 5 Brasilians, including Gabriel and Wilhelm will be here for the Oceanics in February. A great chance to see arguably the top Formula guy in the the world right now.
Sam, are you saying there is a chance that Obelix is going to be at the Oceanics in Feb?
??? Let it be so!!!!
JB
I heard that the new Evo III was based on the custom RSRacings Obelix had in Argentina and since Fortaleza Worlds 2007...that EvoIII looks really good and Wilhelm clearly showed some improvement...just wondering if Paulo having a better board for Fortaleza would have challenged Gabriel a little more..clearly the PD is not that great in open water, and clearly the 161 and 160 (Gabriel and Wilhelm ) had an advantage there.
The new North looks really nice too...what to take next year NP or North..??
any suggestions??
At least the Italian guy is colour coordinated.
Amazing how 5 different models of sails can look so different, but the difference in performance is marginal when in the hands of the Pro's.
Interesting how the leach on the Severne opens up so much in the mid section.
i remember maybe 10 years ago at the Aust Slalom championships at South
Beach, we had 25+ knots of wind and a severe chop. a really strong field of 80
competitors, including 20 or 30 top Scandinavians. 8 rounds of downwind slalom with
long legs. i sat on the beach watching some awesome racing for 3 hours.
most of the top sailors from W.A were struggling in heat 2 or 3!
a offshore boat start Steve Allan was first to inshore mark in every one of his 8
heats, then just cruised to victory in 7 of 8 heats.
in last race of day of day he wiped out finding himself in 3rd place 100/150 metres
behind 2nd place. within a minute or so he had caught up to 20 metres of 2nd
place only to wipe out again. with speed like that not surprising to see why he
became world champion in formula.
Sorry to hijack this post with non NP stuff ...
Going back to Steve's Severne; actually the leech is designed to do that. It's part of the 'Reflex' system where the back 20% of the batten is a separate piece and balloons the sail outwards when the gusts hit it for more power. Looks horrific when you see photos of it, but the concept seems to work very well as Steve was not going slow, and neither was Bjorn with the same concept on his slalom sails.
You can see the join which is the white sticker on the back part of the battens above the boom. If you've seen it in the flesh, they have a little mechanism that you can tighten/loosen the amount the extra batten piece can bend to suit your style. Probably not too dissimilar to the NP Evo II where they had a 45cm boom cut-in that allowed the back of the battens to bend outwards following the leech in a similar way...
That being said, the whole idea of an 'integrated clew', which you now see on the Evo III, does the complete OPPOSITE and locks those battens, which is like NP saying that there old idea didn't work at all ....
Really? It kind of looked like on Wilhelm's sail that the battens weren't bending anywhere at all at the back ... I spent a bit of time behind him in this event! haha.
Anyhow, will be good to see them on the water in the flesh. From what I've seen of them so far this year, they look like a great sail.
Rick, yeah there was so much wind on Sat, it blew my van over....
Des, the second set of sails were for Mike Nelson.
Mike used the 10.7 in 20+ knots in Wollongong, he said the sail was super stable and fast. He summed it up as "Fricken Awesome"
Sam P used the 12.0 yesterday in the really light NE, I'm sure he'll post some intial comments here.
I haven't used them yet because of either too much or not enough wind.
The 10.7 I rigged on Saturday had a super smooth luff pocket, deeper and slightly more forward draft, and firmer leech 2 panels above the boom before falling away nicely compared to the RSR EVO
The bottom 2 battens are now adjustable by allen key incorporated into the familar NP batten system.
