My bro and I got new boards just before xmas. I purchased a 2006 model Quatro freestyle Wave 85, and he purchased a 2007 model Goya Aqua One, 85L. Both are wide at about 58cm, and short, at 240 and 235 respectively. Both have a pin type tail and a chine around the tail for overall ease of riding and freestyle.
Rode both at Dutchies just recently…….no waves there, just bumps, jumps, gybes and fast runs. I must say that the two boards are very similar in feel, comfortable to ride, fast, short but able to cut upwind easily and both able to gybe on a pin, or gybe with a skatey/slide feel off the back foot, or pushing in the rail and drawing a long speed oriented arc. I guess this is modern board design at it’s best. Jumps off the small and infrequent waves were high, with the short board length not detracting from the take off or landing at all.
I came off a Naish 8’5” wave (01 model), and my brother off an Angulo Chango 85 (04 model), both good boards in their element, but no where near as versatle as these new offerings. For cross-onshore conditions in which I sail in back home (Port Macquarie NSW), with surf usually between waist and head high, this style of board offers everything I need….early planning, speed, width beneath my feet to plane through the gusts, fantastic turning and great for jumping. I can only imagine how sweet the backhand wave riding will be, driving from the back foot and slide like a skateboard, or using the rail to carve around.
Alberto at Windshack hooked us up with these boards………I urge you to go in and try the Goya demo board that Alberto has if you are looking at a new versatile wave board.
Did'nt i see you down at safety bay the other day riding your quatro? what did you think of the area as a sailing spot as i noticed u had a wave fin on and there was quite a bit of weed out there ![]()
yep, went out sailing with my Mrs, she is learning to use a short board..............there are truckloads of long weed floating around in that tiny little bay....a lot to be said for weed fins....all the locals were bitching about the weed too, but they had weed fins. Emma didnt seem to mind, she only weighs 50kg, so not much slows her down.
