Hi,
I purchased this boom at Christmas to replace my 20year old boom and what a difference.
The Good
It is strong with minimal flex, it's relatively light compared to my old boom.
The boom to mast section fits well and with the rubber strips it does not move up or down the mast once clipped on. Easy to adjust the length to suit the sail outhaul, it has double pin to adjust the boom rear end, comfortable in the hands a simple boom as a starting point entry boom.
The Bad
At the front end section useing the clip on to mast adjustment is very difficult to release the rope once it is set in the metal teeth to stop it slipping so if you need more or less tension it is a real pain to release.
This is also the case with the rear end rope for the outhaul, if you need to adjust it it is impossible to relase with on pull of the rope and twice now I had to go back to the car a bring the screw driver down to rap the rope around to get enough pull on the rope to release it from the metal teeth.
I hope other brands are not the same. Also I found that it is a good idea to separate the rear end of the boom after your sail because I found that water is trapped in so I remove that part and let it dry out and clean any salt build up and the last thing is the prolimit name on the boom is a stick on letters and they become lose so I glue them three letters back this is a minor issue but still part of the product.
The Ugly
Well that is just the sailor.
So if I knew that this was the problems with the adjustment with the ropes I might of bought another brand, however I have it now so I will make do.
I hope this sheds some light on the Prolimit assult boom.
Thanks
Kind Regards
Walt
Hey lao shi,
Thanks for your reply, no haven't thought about thicker rope I will give that a go this weekend. It does make sense what your saying the thicker rope would not bit in to the metal teeth as much therefore making it easier to release.
The rope was on it already from the package so I assume it would be the correct rope for the boom, but I will let you know how the thicker rope works.
Kind regards
Walt
Hi,
Hey CJW yes those harness lines are about two years old. They do look far apart, I do have alot of problems setting the line's correctly.
Once I set them close about a hand apart and it felt weird I was always changing positions and never got it to work so now I set them further apart and it does relieve my arms abit more, but I am working on that.
Yeah the uphaul rope is a mess I just took it of the old boom and onto the new one but you are right it needs to be streamlined I'll get around to untangle the mess soon.
Thanks
Kind Regards
Walt
Hi Walt,
good looking boom and interesting review. Don't look at the Narrabeen Lake thread in the NSW forum as the pictures may be a bit distressing to you. You may be able to pick up some spare parts for your boom at a reasonable price though.
A boom that lasts >18months and harness lines that last >12 - I'd like to see that.
last three booms maximum 12-18 months - Pryde (harness lines - must be the worst going around) , North, HPL.
Maybe sailing 1-3 times a week is just too much for recreational gear to handle?
