Hi,
I am thinking of changing my Futura 111 for a full slalom board.
My big board is a Manta 135, 85 cm wide and I really enjoy riding this board, alltough it is hard work sometimes. I use Point 7 ACK sails.
What would be the easiest medium slalom board in terms of control in chop and jibing?
Manta 71
Isonic 107
Yfire 114
Patrik 110 or 115

Would use the board mainly with a 7,8 m² sail. My weight is 95 kg.

Best regards.

Alex

I owned the first Patrik 110 - very sweet board, comfy in chop.

Was 68 cm wide. Used it with a 6.3 and 7.0.

Does not plane as quick as the 2015 carbon 107 sonic I owned but a bit smoother to ride when the wind picked up.

The 115 V2 is 70 wide - I really disliked this board the few times I tried it. It sits very low in the water. Has a stiff, rigid ride!

Not tried the RRD 114

Have tried the 2014 Manta - the one around 112 litres.

Not as good upwind as the 107 Sonic for sure, but when you hit 20 plus knots and decent chop it comes in to its own.

The 2014 Manta 71 and the 2016 Manta 106 are both freaky comfortable boards in big chop.

Just shows how individual preference counts so much- I absolutely love my Patrik 115 v2 and find it super comfortable! We have nasty chop where I sail and it cuts through it very nicely. My experience with iSonics is very positive as well - though I find them just that little bit more harsh underfoot in the slop- in our conditions I prefer the Futuras from the starboard range. I think there is a lot of personal style in this. Very very happy with both my Patrik and my Futura. That doesn't help at all I'm sure!!!

love my 2014 isonic 107! I'm 95kg and use a 7.9m much of the time. But, I haven't tried any of the others.

Hi Alex,

I recently replaced my Futura 101 with a Patrik 100 slalom. Very similar feel but with a much better top end speed. Awesome to gybe but slightly more susceptible to a heavy back foot (in other words, likes more fin). Have been trying various fins and will be loosening the back straps slightly following some advice from Dean. Overall, I'm really happy with the $ spent on the upgrade.

Tony.

I just added a 2016 116L Manta to my slalom set up. Only used it twice with 7.9 vapor and Lockwood 38 carbon speedweed. Super fast and very easy to gybe, good board

Interesting to hear good Reviews for the Manta 71. In most of the online tests You can read they say, that the Manta is more technical to sail, compared to an Isonic.

Hi Alex
I've just replaced my 2012 Futura 111 with a Patrik 110 and I am absolutely loving this board. It has better top end and is better in the chop even though the Futura was pretty good, and its a very comfy and an easy board to ride. It isn't as good with early planing, it is actually 5 cm narrower between the front straps compared to the Futura, when I compare boards in future I won't just be comparing the width and OFO. The Patrik gybes better and goes upwind better. I was using C3 Venoms in the Futura but found that these lacked drive in the Patrik so I have changed to Drake DW's, these fins I think as quick as the Venoms, great control and give much better upwind performance. Now I don't race and I'm just a part time GPS sailor and spend 90 % of my time riding in open bay conditions. Also when changing from a Futura to a full slalom, don't expect it to be as durable, and be prepared to spend more time tuning. Any way I'm glad I have made the change, best of luck !
