I know it's not a "gear review", but while on the topic of new formula boards, here is the latest one from Exocet, and the marketing blurb from their website. Nice graphics. Interesting that they have gone for a narrower tail after the wide tail experiment from all the brands last time around.

www.exocet-original.com/

The new Formula board has a narrower tail for better speed upwind and down wind, the power and glide of the board has gained massive amount of grip due to new deck rail allowing a really comfortable ride.

JP Formula

A winner in all waters and conditions, this board is fast and controllable, meaning it clearly outperforms its predecessors and shall dominate the Formula scene.

I havent had a ride yet Ben, just thought you would like to see the pictures.
I will let you know in approx 4 weeks.

Hey Des,

Those EVA chicken straps themselves have been on the JP formula's since they started doing Formula boards 4-5 years ago. Spares are available any time.

If you're asking if chicken straps in general are standard then hell yeah. Formula without them when the winds up is a little on the scary side.

Sam.

Are JP continuing with the Speed and Power 2 model range for the Formula boards? If not, it would be interesting to see what aspects from the previous models were incorporated in the 2014 model.

Just one, Dave. All brands are doing one this time.

Hi Dave,

No first hand views yet but that'll change in about 4 weeks. Chatting to Werner I'm told they tried to achieve that nice blend between the older Speed and Power models. Time will tell but I liked both those old boards so there starting from a good base. Tail width is marginally wider.

Review to follow soon.

BTW, I was at the event with Bernd Flessner (first photo from Rick) and this board is without a doubt the best looking board on the market. The graphics are sick! At a distance when someone is sailing towards you, the yellow really stands out (kinda like the orange/pink fluro tips of the new Starboard waveboards).

Bernd had very good angle and speed and he said he'd only windsurfed once in the last 6 months, so had ZERO prep for the event. So I think the board is going pretty good... he's the only one who had the board (it was a pre-production model) so hard to judge the performance but so far looks the goods...

After sailing a couple of regattas I can now give you some feed back. The new JP Formula 100 is a very fast and exciting board, there is no fighting with this board, it handles like a slalom board and points up wind like a demon. In choppy conditions you will need to sail this board flat to get the maximum speed from it. Sailing down wind is a dream it just gets faster and faster. The board doesnt bog down, tacking and jibing is smooth without any loss of speed. A Magic board and also looks great.
