Anybody used these fins

Any thoughts on these, looking at buying for shallow water and weedy location, any reviews would be good, are these better than your standard weedy fin.

Will be used on a Tabou Rocket 125.

I have found these for $149 any body seen them for a better price.

Just ordered mine should be here this week will review once I try it.

I bought online from Windsurfing Gear they come in Tuttle or Powerbox sizes are 21 or 22.5.

Cost me $164 including delivery for the 21cm.

They look good appear to be a bit more beefier than the normal Delta Fins see how it goes when I use it., I've only been able to find this review on them, which sounds good. http://www.blackprojectfins.com/2014/09/24/introducing-the-freedelta-re-21-a-new-freeride-fin-for-shallow-water-weedy-locations/

All of you that are interested in these fins try Windsurfing Gear for these fins they only have around 5 left in both box styles.www.windsurfinggear.com.au/product_info.php/fins-black-project-freedelta-fins-p-147?osCsid=d14d600e03327316b119a92e6e106025

I bought one of these as well & am very happy with the service I got from Andy. Confirmed the order on Monday & the fin arrived today in Albany WA which was much sooner than I expected.

If anyone is chasing a carbon boom the price I was quoted for a Chinook 160-226 Pro1 by Andy was very competitive imo. Would have bought one but I had just picked one up in Perth over the weekend. Why is at as soon as you buy something you immediately find it cheaper elsewhere??? gah!

Any 'on the water' impressions of this fin? I'm thinking of getting one for shallow water use on my iSonic 90 and iSonic 107 boards.

I'm still getting used to the fin Bartontb as it's the first fin of this style I've had & I've only used it a couple of times.

Firstly it's a solid lump of a fin, I've got the 21cm PB version, noticeably heavier than my Maui Ultra 28cm weed fin. Yesterday I was using it on a 96l Tabou 3S with a 6.5m Ezzy Cheetah in about 14-15knots of breeze & flat very weedy water. On my board the "nose" of the fin doesn't sit flush with the board itself but I'm guessing that has a fair bit to do with the shape of the board itself. Maybe that won't be as much of an issue on the Isonic. Looking at a way to close the gap, tried a bit of sail material at the back of the box & wondering about sanding a bit off the front but not sure about that one.

On the water I've found that it will break free & cavitate a bit in different ways. First way, the board will keep tracking forward at a normal speed but you can see the hole it leaves on the windward side of the fin. I'm still working on the exact technique but sometimes I can reattach the flow by rolling the board with my feet & other times I have to dump the back hand & unweight the fin. Occasionally it will just let go & go full crab but not so bad that it's thrown me off yet & I'm not that highly skilled.

I think I'm quite heavy on my back foot & maybe you need to a bit smoother in the way you sail the board. Yesterday in the last part of my session I got noticeably better at going upwind when powered up by trying to be that little bit smoother with my actions.

No issues at all with it on the gybes turns though those very nicely, if anything I'm getting a bit to far through the turn.

The only place I pick up weed is in the gap between the nose & the board itself. Can start off in even less that knee deep water with very thick weed & still get up on the plane easily enough. Doesn't seem to pick up floating blobs of weed & on the longer downwind run yesterday the weed was pretty thick, very closeto the surface & I had no issues with pushing through that.

Hope that helps

Morts, thank you for the observations! I too tend to sail with a lot of fin pressure so will watch out for that.

My primary purpose in purchasing this fin is to be able to sail in shallow water (knee to mid-thigh) - the only relatively flat water in the bay when the wind picks up. Bottom is mostly soft muck with a little turtle grass, definitely not weedy at the surface so a small gap should not be an issue for me. My FreeDelta is a Tuttle fin so maybe having two screws will help close the gap... Plus the iSonics are very flat in the tail region.

Thank you!

Just looking at the fin, it doesn't push the centre of effort as far forward as the deltas do, in my case that would be a good thing, as I mount my fin boxes forward, to accommodate always using weedies.

Mort, you intuition about sanding the top at the front and bottom at the back, (fin upside down on bench) is correct. One thing you can do is slide the fin in holding the front hard against the box. this will show you how out of parallel the protruding front is with the nose of the board. But if you're using with more than one board be very careful and think about what you're doing.
Make the fin fit in the tightest box and shim the loosest is probably the best option. Also make sure you don't make the front and or back convex, the fin will rotate in the box if you do that, slightly concave will stabilise it.

My FreeDeltaRE finally arrived on Bonaire today. For the iSonics I needed the Tuttle version of the fin. The iSonics 90 is the regular Tuttle box while the iSonics 107 is the 'deep Tuttle'.

First tried the fin in the 107. It slid into the fin box nicely but with the nose raised as you described. Also, the fin bolts that I normally use on this board would not reach the back nut on the fin. Bummer. The bolt issue is easy to solve if longer ones are in stock at the hardware store. Once I have the bolts I'll deal with the slanted fit issue.

Next, I plugged the fin into the iSonics 90. Same front gap issue because the back bottom of the fin base is too shallow by about 2mm. Solved this by putting a bump of 5 minute epoxy on the bottom of the fin base in the back. Now the fin fits correctly in the fin box with no gap in front. Kind of disappointed that the fin needed this type of adjustment to fit properly.

Supposed to finally be some wind tomorrow... Will report back then.

Here is my GPSTC writeup for my sailing session today - provides some insight on the FreeDeltaRE

Bonaire Lac Bay. Sailworks 5.1, Sailworks Retro 5.5, Hi-Tech 8'4" SVF, iSonic 90, Black Project FreeDeltaRE 21cm, Wind: 15 - 20 knots variable NNE

After 9 days the wind finally returned but from a much more northerly direction than normal. Started out on the 5.1 and the Hi-Tech but was underpowered. Rigged the Retro 5.5 and was comfortably powered. After a while of sailing the Hi-Tech I decided it was time to deploy the Black Project FreeDeltaRE fin for the first time. Plugged it into the iSonic 90. As one would expect with a short fin, a few good bounces over big chop highlighted its primary weakness - the fin was pretty easy to spin out if you tried to sail the iSonic as if it had a regular slalom fin, i.e. a using a lot of pressure on the fin. After a couple of 'learning runs' the spinout issue seemed to become much more tolerable. Considering that I got a new 2 Sec PB and a 4th best 5x10 sec, I can't complain about the fin slowing me down .

Here is a followup after riding the fin for a while. This is from my GPSTC posting of March 30

Bonaire Lac Bay. Sailworks Retro 6.5, iSonic 90, MFC KP-RC 360. Wind: 17 ENE Good strenuous workout. After a couple of weeks sailing the Delta fin I decided to go back to a slalom fin for comparison. The immediately noticeable benefit of the switch was that I could stomp on the fin without any fear of it spinning out. This made the board faster on a beam and broad reach when in chop. Downside of course was no 'shallows flat water'. That is a tradeoff I'm willing to make as the increased adrenaline level of going faster in chop more than equals the feeling of an additional couple of knots of speed on the flat water .

hi to all,
When I received the 4 Fins 2 x PB and 2 x TB for the shop I was deeply unhappy with the weight, with the thick profile and the price of course because in Bali we have to count with a 50% overhead for Taxes and Customs, and still you have to be lucky to find a reasonable transport price.
Because of my sickness I was not able to try this expensive pieces but after 5 month we got good winds and the rats come out of the holes to do there funsport. I needed some of my friends which are good enough to feel differences (there are not so many)
For us in Sanur we have to life with the Tide - Tide getting low wind picking up and seaweed reaches the surface. Impossible to go with our long , straight, slalom fins. How ever the time was right this days.
ALL of them was happy with the performance of the Delta fins and all of them was very happy because they had MUCH LONGER Windsurftime.

I must reccomment this fins for shallow water with Seagrass, Seaweed or rubbish floating in the water.

Greetings Hans
