Thumbs Up

Hi guys n girls, I'm currently riding a Fanatic freewave stubby 105, I'm 84kg and live on the Sunshine Coast QLD. I've had this board for about ten months and love it but I'm thinking of getting a 99Lt wave stubby. Most of our sailing is in 12-20 knots, only used my 5m about three times. Just think it's gunna be a lot easier to throw around in the waves. Anyone sailed or got a review on the 99Lt vision.

99S - Mindblowing - dont even think about it - just pull the trigger .... Have tested it in everything from bang onshore (still able to ride frontside and make frontside aerials) , to sideshore logo slower wave to sideshore faster logo wave .... Was amazing sideshore - slower waves with some toed / canted k4 prototype fronts (leap years ahead of stock fin fronts that want to 'lock' the rail up ... ) .... Vs yr freewave stubby - will feel way looser ... actually first sideshore head-hi day I tried it initially with 8cm k4 ezzy fronts and board was ridiculously loose (able to airpop topturns , tail would pop out at ridiculous angles waveriding that suddenly makes you realise how Victor can pull easy frontside onshore airs etc) .... Later in session - plugged in proto fronts 10.75's (3 deg toed and canted) - board was able to jam out some really hard BACKFOOT spray gouges off the top and nicely held frotnside carves etc ... everything is easier - frontside speed and flow , getting upwind , projection in frontside aerials (1st air was waaay out to flats more so than normal for the wave shape/size , subsequent airs on bigger lips clearing whitewater with much more confidence etc) , rotational moves in the wave nice and easy ... the board does sooo many things good , found also I could hit the lip ridiculously late and still the nose punches through hard to save the day , and could leave my drop to air section really late as the board can accelerate so fast to get timing right , and also took a few really tight lines on the lip really late to sections because of the confidence it gives ... but you also have to quickly process what it likes and dislikes in waveriding style , and then apply ... once you do that it has a very flowing feel to it ... (with the right front fins ie not symm stock fronts) .... FOR your situation , you will find it fits easier into wave curves and ability to squirt tight turns in your sailing conditions mentioned - whereas the freewave stubby rocker will probably be fighting those wave curves too much with A) flatter rocker & B) power tail - so it will be adding drag to moments when you want 'easy rocker flow' and release to curve around and hit lips without loss of speed ... the 99 stubby has a nice even rocker with slight tail release to manage anything / everything .... It gets going pretty early , but keeps going REALLY well , and tracks upwind better than pumpkin seed shapes ... I sail alot of different styles of board - from customs to various brand productions , would say the stubby99 is the most fun board Ive ever used ... I bought one straight away after testing for 5-6 sessions in EVERYTHING ... decided life would not be the same without it ... The only thing it didn't like so much was a faster wave say solid 15sec logo sideshore - then it gets a bit tweaky on the rail in bottom turns with my lightish weight of 75kgs (have to concentrate and finesse it a little ) ... Solid logo say 12 sec really nice shape sideshore the board handled it really really well ( enough for me to not want a pumpkin seed shape ) ... the feeling of riding is endless speed ... and therefore options ...

Keep the 105 L and get the 99 L. They make a very complimentary pair.

I've got both the 105 L free wave Stubby and the 99 L Stubby. I spend more time on the 105 L free wave because it is so versatile on both cross shore and onshore waves in the light winds we get here (my most used sail is a 6.9 followed by a 6.4). I find the 99 L is only worth it if there is enough wind to consistently plane with a 6.0. It planes earlier than most wave boards but not as early as the free wave, so when the angle is onshore and the wind is marginal the free wave just makes everything easier. I really like how easy it is to keep speed DTL in onshore conditions on the free wave. When the conditions are 5.7 and cross shore, no contest I pull out the 99 L.
