Reviewing Martin Love's Shockwave fins.

I purchased a few Shockwave fins so I could ride my JP Magic Wave 89L and JP Ultimate Wave 75L in both Thruster and Quad modes.

The Magic Wave comes stock as a thruster with a 19cm center and 10cm side fins, and the Ultimate Wave comes stock as a quad with 2 x 13.5cm center and 10cm side fins.

So for the Magic Wave I decided on getting 2 x 15cm's and the Ultimate I got a 17cm Shockwave. I am very impressed with the fins, I have used the Magic Wave in Quad mode at Sandy Point in DTL conditions and it felt grippy but fast allowing me to do confident carves for my bottom turns. Fast, not draggy but with positive grip is how I would sum them up.

I also do a fair bit of sailing in our Port Philip bay, and when its 25knots+ I use my Ultimate 75L. In bump and jump cross on type conditions I prefer to be in thruster mode, so in this setup I use my Ultimate with a 17cm center. Again, same as above, the fin was fast but grippy, I was a little concerned it might spin out in the really bumpy stuff being so small, but I didn't experience any spin out, even in some fierce Ricketts point chop, the fin held true.

I have always been a big fan of the Maui Ultra Fins X-Wave shape since JP first started using them for there boards. So I was very interested in seeing how the Shockwaves performed as they have a slightly more swept back profile. Martin gave me some fins to demo, but after using them I was impressed and handed him some money As you can see in the pics, they are a good compromise between upright and curvy. Note the JP stock fin I am comparing it to is a 19cm fin, the Shockwave is a 17cm.

For reference I am around 72kg's.

The Shockwave fin covers came in a lovely shade of hot pink and Martin said he personally sands back all the fins himself giving them a perfect finish. They do feel like a high quality product to me and I am very happy with them.

Thanks for the feedback Markus, stoked you like the fins. Yep the design was inspired by the Xwave but as you say I wanted the outline more swept back so it was sort of a midway point between a traditional wave fin and the upright Xwave, trying to get a sweet spot between carve and pivot. I also puled the trailing edge at the base forward which increases the distance from the trailing edge at the base to the tail of the board. I designed my Fusion freewave this way in response to guys saying to me that their Dynos were spinning out when running as single fins. I noticed how close the rear of the fin was to the tail and felt the spinout issue may be caused by the trailing edge vortex extending beyond the board and sucking air. Pulling the trailing edge forward appeared to resolve the issue so I carried the concept over to the shockwave as there seems to be a trend with some board designs to place the fins along way back( not an issue on the Ultimate wave though, that is a tail!!!)

Have to agree Markus, I've been demoing an Atomicsurf Fusion Freewave 26 in my 94 Kode Freewave (as a single) and it's been great. Super stable, very quick and reluctant to let go. Quite loose too, not much different from when the board is set up as a thruster. Nice work Martin.

Yeaterday I pulled the Fins I have been using on my Fusion 105 out which were a Shockwave 25 and 9 cm side fins. This has been an awesome setup for the Bay Bump and Jump but I wanted to try the board as a single fin. So I chucked in a Fusion Freewave 30 to see how it would go.
Different, but good different. My first impresion was how solid the fin felt then I noticed how fast i was going. Even though I have the straps set up for wave riding I could lock in, get my weight out and the board got up on its tail and felt more slalomy. ( I was keeping up with a guy on a Fox which impressed me) As locked in and slalomy as it felt as soon as I stood upright and transfered my weight it started turning....in fact it felt pretty much the same turning as the thruster setup. Maybe a bit more carvy and not as snappy but it still felt loose.
So my conclusion is that if you want to Bay sail and fang on your FSW board a Fusion Freewave fin could be a really good compromise for you, some extra speed without stiffening up the board too much. I will probaly keep this board set up this way as I only Bay sail on it....the Shockwave/ Thruster setup will stay on the Wave boards.
Great fun testing the options.

Ive had the chance to use the Fusion 24cm on a few decent seabreezes lately with my fsw 94L and rate it very highly. As stated above its super quick and rock solid when pushed in choppy bay water. Great fins for any fsw board.

had my first go on the shockwave today. i got one from martin for my 135lt wave stubster. used it with a pair of 50/50 foil 11cm SSD thruster fins. conditions were 8-14 knots dead onshore knee high slop..

first thing i noticed was the fin does not let go and tracks up wind with ease.. most of the session was spent dredging in dead onshore wind pushing hard on the back foot to get the nose over waves and rail tracking upwind and the fin didn't let go once.

second thing i noticed was the fins acceleration. i had a gust or 2 come through which enabled me to get the board going and there was not a hint of drag. everything just got up and took off.
Towards the end of the session a squall went through and the wind swung more cross shore and i got to catch a couple of small waves. bearing away more the board accelerated with ease and once on the face kept on building speed. felt great.

the final thing was the pivot. once the wind had gone cross shore and i managed to catch a few small waves i was in the straps and turning the board. more pivot then carve and the fin just didn't let go.

great fin. keen to try it in some better and slightly bigger wave. today was knee high, sloppy and real light. first use but i felt like the fin was helping the session.
