Don't want to jinx it but this coming Saturday could be the first of the winter westerlies. What really leads me to thinking this is the 10 degree overnight mininum. Oooo baby winter is the best!
Coloundra river mouth? incoming tide & wind looking good early could be ON.
Sailed there a week ago in light southerly banks were good.
You guys hitting Neill st today?
yep early was what i was thinking too finno. incoming tide, strong W / SW could be fun! not much swell around but even 1 footers are fun in that direction at the rivermouth.
can't do neill street today - see you saturday if it's on.
i'll text you
I would go to the southern end of Bribie Island after midday and grab the outgoing tide sailing from Peble beach or Bongaree. If you sail the incoming tide then head to Red beach.if you look at the map of the bay you will see how the wind travels more distance over Deception Bay than just about anywhere. Places like Caloundra , Woody Point and Wello don't have this distance, so are more gusty. Better still head to Moreton which is great in a westerly.
One other thing with Bribie is you can see the gusts coming from a long way so when the wind gust are coming you get a few minutes to get ready.
But westerlies are normally pretty average and frustrating and can make you more grumpy about the wind.
Body drags and tabletops, Finno the renaissance man.
I was thinking of heading up for a drive, till I had the Saturday arvo family BBQ sprung on me last night.
Looks like it will be an early run south chasing waves.
I think it's fair to say the guy using the computer that's doing the seabreeze wave modelling is just about to roll himself another crack cigar.
definitely taking the supsail gear just incase.
yeah it could be a fizzer in most people's eyes but give me 12+ knots cross off and 2 foot waves and i'd be in heaven. worth a look sunday too. sunday going to be cold so pack a wettie
I'm not so worried either. I take the big board, the not as big board and the camera. either way I've got myself covered.
am hoping to find my gopro so I can sail out and try some close ups photos. embarrassed to say I lost it.
I've been going to the bar prob twice a month for the last few months and it's the best I've seen it in a very long time at the moment. the banks are working as good as they can and there is plenty of water at mid to high tide.
it's going to be freezing cold.
forecast keeps shifting slightly but the overall model looks the same. WSW early (WSW best direction for the bar). Dropping by 10ish...
I'll be there from 6
Nice shots Shane. I imagine it will still be quite fluky at the river mouth given the wind is still coming off the land?

See you there Bowsa! Looks the BOM
Anywhere down the goldy way in the Westerly? Also newbie here but where is that photo Gestalt?
You can try from Nth Kirra south, best in a NW, but you can snag a gusty W down there. There are various places further south that could work as well.
Downside is the surf forecast... less than 1ft. :(. Even Lennox in only forecasting 1.3ft. :((
Yep small swell (infact tiny swell) means the bar will work better eaelier on low tide. Theres always a wave at low
Wind forecast has improved too. Yeuww

Thanks Scot was a fun day just Mark and I, bit of a speed bank forming on the Bribie side worth look next time its blows S or SE.
Yeah in W to S/W winds it can be very gusty but once on the wave even at 1ft the push you get from the wave
creating apparent wind and incoming tide wind feels pretty consistent.
Catch you guys there 6am

that photo is the bar in a westerly taken from bulcock looking south towards bribie. I did not take it but that seems to be the angle.
as the guys have said in a westerly the swell dies real quick in qld.
i'm thinking it's going to be epic for me.
small waves, lots of very flat water between waves and an incoming tide. there was one season in the distant past I remember where we had a lot of similar conditions. the coldest I've ever been was the bar that year. we sailed for 15 minutes and then went back to the car to defrost. it was the closest to buying a steamer I've come. :-)
thing with the wind is it's gusty everywhere. wello, Caloundra bar, bribie are all gusty because that's what westerlies are. I've sailed all of them and you typically get 20 minutes of howling followed by 15 minutes of holes.
maybe tomorrow won't be like that. I as well as lots of others here have gone to a spot with a killer westerly forecast only to get rain and calm conditions. it's a lottery. problem is the low is south and the further north you go the less chance of wind.
i'm keen to roll the dice though.
yeuwww. neill st no good? i guess there's not a lot of swell about
A few of us got a an hour or so late Monday arvo at Neil St well powered on 5.4 until the wind just disappeared...was a nice wave on the reef and off Dickys's.

Couldn't agree more but unfortunately not going to make it to the bar on this weekend unfortunately as have family commitments this weekend...promising signs for winter though. Enjoy!!
unfortunately the swell does look almost non existent... low tide now and bulcock cam is showing basically no waves. would be slightly better on incoming tide. I'm still gonna give it a go... i'll be wondering otherwise.
best bet for waves will be before 7:30am. low is at 5am. I'll be sailing first light
Well that turned out to be ok! Sailed 6-9am on the small waves infront of the boardwalk... 1footers only but if you got a good one you could still smash out three or four fast turns. Got a couple of nice little aerials too although at times it was a bit sketcky landing in 6 inches of water. Those who know my poor board - she's snapped enough fins this year haha.
Unfortunately the action didn't last long... trent amd I got the best of it. Good to see a few people out having a crack in the waves though. When it turned slightly more sw it was easier to snag a wave, but by then the tide was too high so the waves were tiny and full.
Glad I went up. Good to see a few people I haven't seen in a while.
Oh and I sailed my ever trusty 5.3 / 100l quad combo. Frikkin love that set up. Works in 10 knots float and ride cross off to 25 knots cross on.
Bring on more winter westerlies
agree bowsa, I got there around 8.30,
had a chat.
was on the water after 9 I guess. the wind hadn't quite stretched that far north so took the 5.8m and 9'8" sup out for some fun. gotta say it was one of the most fun sessions I've had in ages. there were times when I was hanging on trying to stop the board railing up and times I was longboarding and times I was comfortably hooked in. the waves were cool and I finally figured out how to get onto and drive the sup down the face of small waves in lightish winds without pumping. managed on a couple of waves to accelerate out in front before coming back onto the face.
spent the last half hour on the water just not in the right spot as the good guys picked up plenty of waves around me.
had a break and then got out the camera. about that time the wind kicked in a little more (12.30ish) so I got some shots. will try and get them online tonight. by that stage only 3 guys on the water but they were planning most of the time on wave kit, jumping and picking up the small waves at will.
then it died.
all up I had a memorable day. be back again tomorrow for what's left of the waves in the morning and asked peter N to loan me some slalom or formula gear for the arvo session.
the whole area all the way down the eastern side of bribie and about 2km out to sea was as flat as the main run at burrum by the time I went home. I look forward to some very long runs tomorrow arvo in that.
felt good to jump off a board into knee deep water with sand and be able to see my toes. ![]()
Sounds good Bowsa. That board sounds like just the ticket. What is it?
100L Stoney Keel Quad - 230x59
Just put in some small rear fins (14cm K4's - quite small for such a big board). Goes so well with them!
Looked on the bulcock cam today and it looks like it's blowing it's tits off but is flat as a pancake so i'm giving it a miss
It was quite windy :-).
one could almost say consistent.
perfect slalom spot today.
where were all of the slalom/speed people. One of the best venues around. Cross shore, crystal clear water and warm.
