would be short runs, wouldn't you prefer to sail on the other side of the fence?
i was just there recently and it wasn't there, did that all happen in just the last week or so?
I'm in the water at Golden Beach as well sometimes. Isn't it better to have stormwater runoff filtered through a basin rather than direct into the river?
Just read the story online, sounds like a typical council balls up, the science behind the concept is unsound, let alone the mozzie breeding ground.
Conversely stormwater directly into the passage is not ideal either.
Seems like no locals had any say in it either, shame.
This is a disgrace

If you feel like commenting do, cause this sort of this could happen at your local without warning. There's conjecture at present that indicates this was a mistake and it was some sort of effort by the local council to demonstrate a method of "purifying water". It seems to look more like a beer trap for kiddies or a landfill.
I've sailed at golden beach countless times and its one of those really accessible and hearty places anyone (parents kids windsufers fishermen kites) can have a good time. This is a total eye sore and an example of crap unilateral decision making ![]()

I don't live on the Sunshine Coast, so I have no vested interest. However looking at it from a Civil Engineering point of view, direct discharge of urban storm water into waterways is a major source of pollution. The engineering behind the storm water retaining structure is reasonably sound. The idea is that storm water is retained in the structure and pollutants are filtered by the sand before the storm water is discharged into the Passage. Water wont pond in the structure because the sand will allow the water to drain. Any solid pollutants, plastic, paper etc, can then be removed from the structure after the storm event.
I had a look at it today. I think that they will have to put a pool fence around it because the kiddies playground is right beside it. Bike paths and beach access appear to be the same. Still an eyesore for tourists and locals alike. at least it is not like the creek running into Sunrise Beach. It has treated sewer water in it.
Yes it is ,but there,s another 3 outlets to the left and 3 to the right about 100 metres apart ,i'd wonder if all those outlets will get holes?
Plus there's water in this one now and it hasn't rained for 2 weeks?
I was chatting to one of my civil engineer mates who's seen the site and he was saying that infiltration basins are almost totally ineffective in instances where the ground water reaches these levels (especially given heavy tidal influence). His concern was that this was going to flood and thus encourage contamination and possibly erosion or the surrounding area. He went on to also mention that this would be highly ineffective "cost wise" due to its proximity to a park/toilets/recreational facilities as it would require significant investment and maintenance to meet acceptable levels of public safety.
I think this is why the local councilors have don't a face palm on the whole subject. Lets just hope they do the right thing and fill the ditch in. We can only hope otherwise wheres everyone going to rig for the next Caloundra freerace ![]()
I vote for Gav's front lawn
I had a look today
. Whilst sources within Unity Water would have us believe the sewer pumping station next to this abomination doesn't discharge raw sewerage to the passage anymore, I am not convinced. Can't wait until it does discharge into this thing and the stink it will create! If this is the type of thing Council are spending our rates on ($150K apparently) what the hell is it going to be like when they start developing the Maroochy Town Centre!!!! God help the Sunshine Coast rate payers!
Where is the Sunshine Coast Environment Council on this one? If it were a private developer, wow!
Here is another one, I witnessed a Council roads worker using a blower to get gravel out of a road box instead of a shovel this very morning, GENIUS! $50 for a shovel vs $500 for a blower and I might add it wasn't doing much of a job, poor bastard was on his knees so he could get a half decent angle to force the gravel out of the hole. Can't wait for the next rate hike!
