There are plenty of locations in kite in SEQ over winter for (**note intermediate to experienced due to gusty conditions**) kiters who understand the risks. I travel over an hour through summer to kite, if you love it its not really far. There are numerous lakes that can accommodate us and they funnel the nw/w/sw winds.
In SEQ, Lake Wivenhoe is the best option with 2 options being Logans Inlet and Hayes Landing. Once more you need to be at least intermediate. Hayes landing has cleaner wind however is more isolated so bring friends.
Both have areas to self launch due to the current water levels but a helper is preferred for kite wear. If more kiters were aware of the location it would be comfortable kiting with folks to help launch and land. I have watched the Gatton wind observations on BOM and then visited the locations and you are good to ride in a W/WSW at intermediate 78Kg a 12m on a 138x410 at the Gatton Bom reading of 14knts with 20knt gusts. Over winter I hope it gets to help more of you on to the water and someone to launch my kite.
Or just head to Woody Point or Bells Beach, Clontarf. If it's windy there will be someone there to launch and land you, intermediates and experienced only.
