Has anyone sailed in Auckland (NZ) before? I'm heading over for 2 weeks at Christmas/NY's and hope to get in a few days of sailing.

I know of a few places, Pt Chev, Lake Pupuke, Mission Bay, has anyone sailed there and can recommend anywhere? I'd prefer flatter water (you know, not as choppy as the bay!) but mainly just a good place for some fun sailing.

Thanks!

Pt Chev looks pretty flat and you can hire gear there:

Bayswater just over the AKLD harbour bridge on the right hand side (heading to Takapuna), very flat water (can be shallow but has hire equipment) bayswater/shoal bay

Lake Pupuke is pretty bloody flat unless its really howling (where it get messy as its such a small lake) used to be a hire place right there on the bay (fresh water, and beware the Wilberforce's)

Next to mission bay there's kohimarama (co-he-marre-ma) beach where there are sometimes lessons and used to hire off the beach (pretty crappy when i was there 5 years ago)

Here's it is on Google maps, This is SE of Mission Bay, head for Pakuranga, Howick;

www.google.com.au/maps/@-36.8644961,174.9043708,3260m/data=!3m1!1e3

and some youtube clips

There are also a lot of smaller bays at Howick; Howick Beach, Cockle Bay, etc

I haven't sailed there for 30 years but by the looks of the youtube clips it hasn't changed, Brings back lots of memories, and from what I remember that sand bar would be great for GPS
