Hello Everyone,
I know there are a lot of windsurfers up here in NQ, I am interested to establish a network here of sailors. If anyone has some cool spots to sail please post. I have made a video of Bowen where I am living now.
Has anyone wavesailed Holbourne Island. I believe there are real waves there?
great video ,me and snorkel sail in townsville,i get to bowen about twice a year ,normally sail the front beach in early mourning. i have not sailed out of kings yet ,is that the place they launch from
Hey Guys,
The creek mouth is the closest point to my house. Its not the best place to launch really. Up the beach either at Rose Bay end or Flagstaff end is better.
That's one hell of a walk of shame if the wind dies. What about stingers up there? I just got back from doing Cape York and there is some seriously beautiful water and there was really good wind most days but the waterways EVERYWHERE where empty and stinger signs everywhere. I know it's more so in the warmer months but are they that much of an issue?

November to May is the time you need to be careful, wear a wetsuit or stinger-suit.
The rest of the year is no problem.
Hey Pottssy, Great vid,
I'm in Airlie, usually sail at Front Beach, hasn't been the best winter, only been out twice.
Had a sail at Whitehaven on Friday, only 10-15, using 8.6/130, awesome spot.

Only if you get stung and depends on how many tentacles hit you and where. I got hit when with one nearly 30 years ago when I was living up there. fell off and swam through it getting back to the board. was wearing boardies and t shirt got hit on back of leg and back of forearm, hurt like hell and had scars for ages.
Stinger suits are the go for the summer months, back in the 80's they had really cool colours just ask Grich about the bright fluro pink one he had.![]()
ps that's the box jelly I am talking about I don't know anything about the tiny irukandi ones that are causing a few problems now.

checked all me old photos only every owned 1 stinger suit it was blue and black

i think you got me mixed up with the red man, he would go pink when sun burnt
hi pottssy if you are after waves ,alva beach can get some good waves ,you need south easters running strong for a few days. its got a wicked current so you have to keep up wind , also can be a bit of a walk over the dunes if the tide is out.it generally gets better wind than townsville
Yeah stingers are an issue. The weird thing is that I never got stung once growing up here! My first sting was on the Gold Coast. I have heard Alva is pretty good I will check it out when we get a good run of SE. I was having lunch at the Eimio Hotel in Mackay a couple of months back and there was some good cross shore waves looking up at the point. I think Dolphin head? Has anyone sailed that place?
I did pick up a box Jelly fish once and only got a small tentacle on my finger - hurt like hell! I still don't wear any stinger suits. I should though.
I reckon stinger suits are good insurance- plus less sunburn and some protection from fin cuts. I see what you mean about Holbourne looking at the map. Saunders beach gets some decent waves in the SE and Nelly Bay at Magnetic gets some nice crumbly, lining up SE-er waves with a bit of a beat out to the wave.
i think you will find it hard to talk a boater in to taking you out to holbourne as the waves are wind driven and could get very rough .i have been up and down the coast in storms and that area can get large waves that will broach a boat ,i spent a couple of hours trying to get out of some breaking waves that had put my 30 ft savage over on her cabin windows 3 times .
