Hey guys wondering what the conditions are like around this area.
Looks like there are some potential spots for wavesailing but wondering about the quality and consistancy?
is it just bump n jump like the rest of QLd north of sunny coast.
hey mate.
yep unfortunately it is. the last spot north is double island point. can be fickle and needs a big E / SE swell to wrap around and a strong SE as it's really offshore.
anything north of there is blocked by fraser island and the reef. can be some good jumping spots along the way (elliot heads is OK on it's day - just think starboard tack corros but not as good).
best pack the slalom gear or just the fishing rod - cause there ain't no waves

Wreck rock, south of Agnes Water, the swell gets in between the tip of Fraser and the start off the reef. The Gladstone guys also used to sail the sandbanks on the eastern side of the shipping channel off Tannum. Lady Musgrave island has been sailed as well.
thanks guys pretty much as I suspected. Its hard to leave the west coast for bump n jump but the work offer is pretty attractive.
How many days per week would you say it gets windy on average.

None
now stay put![]()
I've sailed Agnes water and 1770 for years. Straight off the beach at the life savers club is ok, and the bar at 1770 in a big SE or northerly is awesome. Long lines of swell to ride. But gusty in a SE but ok. Northerly better but the swell gets chopped up I've sailed Fitroy Reef. Gotta get a boat there obviously.

Troppo,
You could always pop up and see me in Yeppoon - no DTL stuff but I'd give you a beer afterwards. Have sailed agnes water recently and definitely no DTL sailing when windy (which is all onshore) although maybe some local boys know of side shore / off shore spot. There's always the reef around the capricorn group - Heron, North West Is. etc.
PS - I've got a boat (Southern Star - centre console banana boat) so if you make the move I'll take you out for a trawl.
Meant to say we get our fair share of wind here. Also I spoke to Gaz the other day and i think he's got a contract in Gladstone starting in a month.

Mate I lived right there for two years. It never gets windy in QLD unless there is a cyclone. You see all these white caps and you think you beauty and there is just no weight to it, especially if you are used to wind from SA or WA.
You will sail 5 times a year, only on your big gear, your wave gear will grow cobwebs, no swell gets in. Agnes 1770 is 1 1/2 hours away.
If you are on the Island, plan for more mosquitos and sand midges than you have ever seen in your life. The Pogues song dirty old town was written about Gladstone.
but the work offer is pretty attractive.
F work, don't do it Benny ![]()

Where were you living under a rock? I sail about once per week on 5.3 or smaller wavesailing in waves feom knwe to mast high. Its not as bad as is made out, just not as consistent as wa
are you sure sausage?
agnes near surf club is side shore in a SSE-SE wind which is also when the swell is best.
wreck rock south of agnes is cross off but I've not sailed it. I know nothing about access there either.
DTL in qld you can count the location on 3 fingers that fire regularly.

please tell more about Fitzroy reef?
how'd you get there?
what's it like?
interested because I'm keeping a record of everywhere to sail in QLD and I've not got anything on Fitzroy reef.

Justin,
Sailed there last month so unless you know something I don't it's definitely not side shore in a SE. Also the waves are mushy shore breaks when windy and nothing like what Troppo would get excited over.
Here's my tracks from near the point and then down at the surf club (both in a SE) at Easter

Agree with you Bowsa - maybe Jfunk only had his 3.5m when he lived there ![]()
seems we had slightly different experiences.
interesting to note if you look at the wind statistics the predominant wind direction from march-may is SSE.
I agree troppo won't dig agnes for wave sailing. nowhere in qld with regular easy access will give him the waves he is used to.

Mate I was standing right next to you the other Sunday or Sat at the river mouth Caloundra in the Westerly as we were waiting for enough wind just to be able to stand on our boards.
I then saw you put up a post about what a great day it was. I think you may be a glass is over flowing sort of guy.

dude i'm not the kind of guy to have an online debate, but let's get a few things in line.
1) we get wind in QLD
2) that day i clearly said in my post it was 1ft with light winds and that a lot of people would probably consider it a crap session because of the light wind
3) i may be a glass overflowing sort of guy, but at least that means i have a fun session rather than constantly wishing the wind was stronger/waves bigger
4) if we were standing next to each other at the bar that day, who are you??

Hi Sausage - Troppo was on the same plane to Perth last week. Looks like it is a definite start down there for me. Might be time to get a new wetty.

righto, well say g'day next time. the scene is too small not to know people!

Gaz,
Good news mate. Hopefully it'll be windy on your days off. Don't think you'll need any serious wetty action though - that neoprene rashie you use and some boardies should be fine for winter.

No worries. I keep to myself generally. I will be the dude with Maui sails.
