A new light pole is being put in at the top of the steps opposite the new bin which will make it very hard to get your sail down the steps. We spoke to a RoadTek supervisor who is managing the job and he is going to raise the possibility of putting in new steps, away from the light pole/bin, with his boss and will let us know the outcome. It was also suggested than we petition the local officials to see if that will help.
I thought we may be able to ask Windsurfing Queensland Inc, Bayside Sailboard Club etc to assist in the petitioning for new steps ?
A no fishing from steps sign would be nice had people sitting at the top with camp chairs the other day.
I then had a fall with my sail trying to avoid them fortunately didn't break myself or my gear.
Would definitely be worth petitioning the council re the pole. Although they will claim it is a safety issue for the light to be there for people using the stairs at night possibly.
After eventually tracking down who actually controls the area (BCC had no idea) I have spoken to the Engineer in charge and he has informed me that the infrastructure (electrical cables and footings) were installed before the footpath was put down.
I highlighted the safety and access issues relative to negotiating the new pole and walking out behind the rock wall or trying to negotiate the rock wall on the southern side and asked that he consider installing a new set of stairs on the northern face (for northerlies) and also one on the southern face for southerlies.
He hasn't promised anything as yet but I will keep you up to date once he has had time to deliberate.
Regards, Scot (President WQ)
Good luck Scot, I approached those responsible prior to works commencing & requested same highlighting safety issues for not just windsurfers but also fishers & those using harbour. The reply was pretty much sod off, the budgeting has been done, the contractors awarded & they dont condone any activity such as windsurfing or boaters climbing rocks should they get blown into trouble as we've seen many times.
