Guys, I'm in Noosa for the weekend. Forecast is straight north / possibly NNW on Sunday. I read from post below that Noosa river mouth can be ok, but has anyone actually sailed off noosa beach itself? Or does this spot not get the wind?
NO!!! don't go straight off the beach at Noosa the fun police will lock you away!
You need to go to the river mouth at the end of the 'spit' the wind will howl in through there...I haven't been up there for ages so I cant tell you how much water will be available to you inside the bar, can be anything from 50-500m! pending on sand build up and tide.
There are lots of sandbars so small fin, the bar/surf is awesome bump and jump in a big blow, then you can head out into the bay, blast parallel to Hastings street but stay well off shore (shark net distance) there are some nice swell ramps out front for jumps,
DO NOT go to close to the National Park as you will get wind shadowed (don't ask me how, it just doesn't blow into the corner?) and don't go into shore as your will chop up swimmers then they will dually hang you in a public hanging at the Noosa SLC!!
Best tide is 'outgoing' once the tide has turned in and is on the flood the current will kill the wind.
If this all sounds too hard (Parking at the Spit is near on impossible, especially with 4 million kites!) then try 'Munna Point' down stream for a flat water blast.
I have had some great sessions there over the years, both jumps and smooth water...but it really is dominated by kites(I kite also, so don't get me wrong, but this is a busy 'learning area' so a lot are crashing and getting dropped!) and sand bars these days. because of the shallow waters/sandbars etc it is a spot that really suits small board/fins.
I have closer options to home, so haven't sailed here for a while, the other good the other good thing about Noosa Head is that it works as the wind swings more N/NW, so you get the 'full day/evening to sail' which isn't always available in Northerlys at other coastal locations.
Great forecast have fun.
Thanks for the advice. Looks like ill give the river mouth a try.
If you are good at Windsurfing you'll b fine at the spit. One other regular guy sails with all the ktters, & is well respected! I watched yesterday & he was having a blast!! Bigger winds for Sunday so it will be crazy with kites!
