After some coastal scenic sailing today , I had a nice reminder that its handy to have insurance! Which you get 24/7 with your club membership.
A good 100-200 meters offshore I sailed past (luckily off the plane) a lone swimmer in Mooloolaba bay, with the low glaring winter sun making it near on impossible to see him, I didn't spot him until back at shore...it could have easily gone wrong, he managed to get missed by me, many ocean kayaks, jet boat , jet skis, and some sailing boats...but they do pop up (stray swimmers!!) from time to time in the most unusual of places, and they are not easy to see.
And I did drag off 'get set sail cruise sailing cat' to Mudjimba and back...by a complete length in the end!
that was just some of the tracks, did about 40km of on/off blasting, hard work 'gust surfing' as many 0knt lulls as 20knt gusts! But really nice when they click in for a while, challenging getting back to the start also, calls for some disciplined dogging just to make sure you pinch some upwind meters! Was a bit W/SW rather than W...W is best there, and early in the blow as it dies off super quick.
Pretty sure swimmer had the snorkel mask long distance thing going on, so was just an arm popping up every now and then that gave it away...when its a howling Northerly there you often come close to some of the SLC crew training on their Ski's also.. so I guess the Moto of the story is unless you sail in complete iscolation of human existence the 24/7 club insurance deal is good value, just in case its ever needed.
Thanks for the post, as weekend hack I have never giving it much thought. Having spend the off season getting healthy and geared up im ready for a big season however interested in what "club" offers insurance given I am in Brisbane's north side. Cheers Jason
