Hi All,
Planning to windsurf on Green Island (10th-13th July). Booked flights with Jet Star (so can't bring my own kit). However, sounds like you can no longer rent kit on the Island. Has anyone got any ideas!? I would be looking for a 95lt ish board and rig (sails, 4.5-5.8). Would anyone be able to rent me some of their kit for 4 days.... would be really grateful and stoked to windsurf there!!
Hi Wesley, there is no gear rental in Cairns. Have a look of this old post :
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Windsurfing/Queensland/Cairns-Holiday/
You may contact Parentalrite to see if he or his group of windsurfers can help...they are very nice. Have a good holiday!
Sorry Wesley, but the tides on those dates are no good for the island!
The waters too low to sail on the reef flats so you will be sailing in the messy mid tide chop and swell with no safety net, as you will have to sail down wind of the island most of the time you are here.
Unless your staying on the island, then you will be able to sail before 10 in the mornings and after 3 in the arvos.
At least it will be warm!
Good Luck!
Thanks Windragon and Kel71... will try and get in touch with parentalrite.
dissapointing the the tides don't work out better, but still worth a crack isn't it? This map (from old sea breeze post) seems to suggest there's a decent area on 0.9 and above... and on my first day could get a couple of hours in (1.4 and over) before 4:45 ferry........ Hoping!!
What about windsurfing from the mainland, are there any good spots?
Hey Wesley,
I think the mainland hotspot is Holloways Beach now. (Don`t quote me on this as I haven`t sailed in Cairns since the 90`s)
Used to be Yorkeys, but I think the kiters claimed it!
I also had a good sesh. once at Buchans Point sailing to Double Island and back.
Four-mile beach at Port Douglas is good too.
Michaelmas Cay is an awesome spot too, but need a boat to get there.(check out Firie Bob`s video on youtube,- Incredible!!)
Green Island is worth a go, even if tides aren`t good, just an amazing place to visit.
Good Luck.
Thanks Whitsun, the kit situation is not looking too good. But will be sure to check some of those places out if I can get hold of some! Looks a fun place to be a windsurfer.. at this time of year anyway!
