Welcome to Ian Knight from the ACT (yes I know it's not NSW but whoopee doo) and Trent Cooper from the Mid Coast, both making their first forays into the speed table.
Remember guys, this is purely just a table to judge your speeds against mates and other new south welshman. Personally I am seeing more and more guys on the water with GPS's who I know don't post (Mr Severne Code Red and *Board I-sonic at Botany Bay Thursday afternoon going nice and quick) so if you do also try and encourage them to get on send me their speeds. Remember we are going to be starting our giveaway prizes next year for biggest percentage increase in 2 sec peak speed. The old adage is you have to be in it to win it!
Happy sailing guys

ACT? He should be banned!

The slacker's actually living in NSW anyway and is probably too lazy to tell you.

Hi Pete. Lend me your GPS? Okay, thanks. Send it along.

I hope it's a GT-31 as I already have a GT-11 and a Foretrex 101. Wearing 3 GPSs may be a bit over the top, but at least I am likely to get a result (Yes, I already have a GPS or two)

I might take them on the WA trip. Do the results have to have been in NSW waters, or just by a NSW resident?

Correct me if I'm wrong Rexy, but it is NSW waters only isn't it? We can't have any unfair advantages coming vie the Fremantle Doctor can we?

Hmmm... Andrew, where does that put me if I do some decent runs in Jervis Bay?

Can I somehow annex Safety Bay and maybe Point Walter into NSW for a few weeks?

Pete I was thinking of signing up to the double demerits. It sounds like the cockroaches have way too many already, and I would never lower my standards to sail in Narrabeen anyway

Yeah, you are right, I have given up drinking. I no longer drink anything that doesn't have bubbles in it.

Well as far as I know Jervis bay is in NSW so your speeds there will be fine. I envy your trip to WA but unless the state govenments suddenly rezone Pt Walter and Safety Bay into being part of NSW then you're on your own there sonny Jim.

By the way, out of the 25 people who are signed up to be members of the Cockroaches only 16 post and probably only 8-10 with any regularity. Whilst being NSW's biggest team we are hardly the most active in its membership postings. Personally come January 1 I would like to see a weeding out of non posters. If they want to post then let them sign up again to show they are actually keen. I'd rather be part of a team that actually want to compete, not nescessarily to win, but at least give it a nudge.

Ahh, okay, I will petition the government for Safety Bay to be included in NSW, but I expect I will be out of luck Jervis Bay has a confusing (well at least to me) position in that it is meant to be a separate territory governed by the ACT.

I don't think I would help your cause with the cockroaches either. Apart from the last two speed weeks at Sandy Point, the GPSs hardly get wet. I keep sailing, but until now I haven't worried too much about carrying a GPS.

Maybe with Pete's encouragement I will drag them out of retirement for some friendly competition, although I am sure they have a habit of not recording sessions when they are too slow...

Hi Mr Severne here, looks like I've been hollered out. Might as well dob my sailing buddy Spanners as well he doesnt post much either, and alerted me to this post.

Wednesday was a little bit more controllable than Thursday at Kyeemagh. I got a freak gust running in behind the breakwall at the river entrance, cracked a 34.21 (from gpsar without spikes) before attempting a gybe and crashing, cartwheeling across the water. The chop and the wind being a bit north meant we couldnt get consistant runs down the runway.

Thursday was more of a survival session, only could manage a 32.3, again the chop and wind angle wasn't the best and long harness lines seemed the order of the day for easy ejection.
Kit used for both days was a 2009 Severne Code Red 5.9, *Board isonic 101, goldwing 36.
Cheers,
Russ

PS: Can I now be a card carrying member of the Cockroaches team? Promise I'll post more!

I reckon Andrew has it spot on in his post. Lots of members but bugger all posters.
If you look at the other state teams they are quite consistent and most post reguarly.
There are also a few blokes around that are doing good speeds but havent joined a team. Come on fella's, its painless and good fun. You know who you are!!!

Why did so many people join the Cockroaches and then never post results? One of the reasons I didn't join the team was there were about 20 members and I thought my results would not make much difference to the team results. Was there an initial burst of enthusiam?

I'm thinking if you haven't posted a session in two or more years then your position should be reviewed.

Does it really make a difference if there are lots of members?

I was one of the original members of the cockroaches and used regularly use my GPS. Then I broke my foretrex and got a GT11. The Navi is way harder to use then the foretrex and my interest declined.

There certainly was a huge surge of interest initially, but the rules did not encourage participation, rather speed. I have not checked whether this has changed since a few years ago. It was the case that all any members of a team that sailed on a particular day had their results averaged.

So if Sam Parker, "Bossman" and "Christ Ing" and got 40kts and I got 20, then the Team average is 35Kts. If I do NOT post my speed the team gets 40kts. The team is better off if I do not post my speeds at all.
The issue only arises because of the large disparity in skill and hence speed.

As I said - I have not checked the rules since then to see if it has changed.

Guys I'm sorry if I have stirred up a hornets nest. But please believe me it is with the best of intentions.
I am sure you all, like me, think Windsurfing is the greatest thing to do aside from sex. Then again I find it hard to believe any orgasm could be better than the feeling of breaking 40 knots
My motivation is for the love of my sport. Personally I think what Hardie and Nebbian have created in the GPS challenge is pure genius.
John I see your point in thinking that your 20 knot peak against a couple of 40 knot peaks is not worth anything and so are not motivated to post, but that is where you are wrong. Whilst ultimately it may not count toward the team score it will however hopefully give you a greater desire once you see your numbers to get inspired to beat your own personal bests. I think you will find also that the numbers are an average of the 2 best posts in each category, not an average of every posted speed per category. So you may not be the fastest but you may have done the most k's in which case you will contribute to the overall team score average in that category. There has been a lot of thought go into the various categories so as not to disadvantage the slower guys. John you may also want to corner a GT user and ask them how it works. I used to have a foretrex and I can tell, once a GT is setup it is wayyyyyyy easier to use. You turn it on, you sail, you turn it off. No need to save anything, it's all there on the card when you get home and whack it into the computer.
I never for once consider myself to be anything other than average in this sport. I know that also that if Rick or Sam are on the water on the same day as me that pretty much anything I post will be worth jack too. BUT, I love to try and beat my bests. And the way I know what my bests are is by posting. Remember, the GPS Team Challenge is a TEAM challenge, not an individual one. It is also for FUN. I'm starting to think that too many guys are putting too much emphasis on winning each month and that is actually demotivating members. That is partly why I started the NSW table, so this way we can guage ourselves against each others performances. Unfortunately in Sydney we don't have a Sandy point or a Hardies run or Wello Point, we have what we have and we are all trying to make the most of the spots we do. I have never given any thought to sailing up Port Macquarie way except for waves but the sensational posts I have seen from the Mid Coast Marauders has opened my eyes to sailing spots I certainly didn't know existed, ie- Queens Lake.
The ultimate goal for the challenge is to get people on the water. It is to get people excited about sailing and gives you a goal. If that doesn't interest you, that's fine. No one is pressuring anyone to join a team. To me it just makes sense to share in something and add another dimension to your sailing time on the water.
Russ I'm glad I outed you. I think your mate Spanners might have been the guy on a Koncept and it would be great if you could get him interested in posting too. If not on the challenge at least here on our NSW table. Who knows, you may even be the lucky winners of some goodies or gift vouchers from the very generous Sam Parker from Wind Surf N Snow.
Ok, I have crappy hangover and I'm going to bed now. Rant over

Jeebus - Rex, It wasnt meant as an attack at you or what you are doing here. In fact it was not meant as an attack at all. I just wanted to explain my logic for not participating over the last while.
I agree with you on every point, absolutely. I sail for the pleasure I derive from being on the water, and meeting like minded people. If I didnt get that pleasure I would drop it like a rock.

Good on you for getting people motivated again, it has made me carry my GPS the last three times I was on the water - something I havent done in ages. For that alone you are to be congratulated.

PLEASE FORGIVE ME REX FOR CAUSING YOU TO WRITE SUCH A LONG EMAIL WHILE HUNGOVER.

I'd just like to say G'day to all the "Randoms" out there

That's the collective term my wife uses for all my windsurfing associates, whoever they may be - because she has no idea who they are (might keep it that way )

I have gone from an irregular loner sailor to an addicted (slow-poke) windsurfer & rarely go sailing without meeting a 'Random' - for a sail, chat or beer.

Most of it due to Seabreeze & GPSTC

It's all good fun - & I'm gonna keep it that way

Hi guys,

Great to see you lot fired up and active!

Just to make it clear -- there's never any penalty for posting on the GTC, there is never any way that you can drag the average down. We carefully set things up this way to encourage more of the slower guys to sail... and whaddayaknow, they soon became quick guys

Also thanks for the comments regarding inactive members, it's a common request, and something we're looking at implementing for next year's comp.

Cheers

S_E_Rex,

I feel that I need to declare a conflict of interest for the proposed comp next year. I have an arrangement wth Sam Parker that may disqualify me from getting any prizes.

If I break the World Speed Sailing Record he will give me 20% off a GT31.

I do now realise the error of my negotiation strategy, I did not include an upgrade clause - once the GT31 becomes obsolete I will have to enter into another round of negotiation with Sam to upgrade the agreement to the latest GPS version.

Now that I have got that off my chest I leave it to the Cockroaches community to decide if I can still compete or not.
