Just checking out Lake Illawarra on Google Earth and I noticed a fairly long break wall down at Yallah off Yallah Bay rd. Any South side/Illawarra guys know what it's like behind the wall in a Southerly or SW? It looks like there is some vegetation/trees along part of it so it may not be any good plus it's hard to tell how high it is also.
Apart from that I saw some good speeds were achieved on Saturday in the westerly down there. Do you have any other good spots you care to divulge?
i spoke to Ian couple of days ago and he said it was great in a W
maybe we should go down there next time looks a dam site safer than Swansea !!
That wall is near Tallawarra power station and is about 8 foot high with trees and bushes all over it, massive wind shadows on downwind side. Best spot in the lake is as Ian pointed out , east side of sandbar between Primbee and Windang in a westerly.Launch at the Yacht Club and 3 tacks should get you there. In a noreaster guys sail from Yacht Club over to Primbee and back, thats not too bad either.
Up in the Warrawong channel has some real potential if the right combo of wind and (believe it or not) weed come together. Need to have no loose weed in the water plus a healthy 'forest' of growing weed on the bank in the centre of the channel, growing all the way to the surface to flatten the waves. Line this up with a strong seabreeze and I belive there is some real speed potential. On the few occasions where it has been promising, the water surface has been almost glass-like (dare I say it sandy-point like). It's not a long run - you need to have a strong puff line up with your departure from the northern shore and hit speed pretty quickly.
Having said all that, after several years I've yet to nail the perfect day of wind, weed and gear. Here's to this season being the one!!
