Weather is no good for sailing, at the same time I have been using the gps for 1 year exactly, so I compiled a few stats:
Number of days out sailing: 77
Kms : 1891
Most used board: Goya 116 - 34 times
Second most used: Formula 162 - 23 times
Most used sail size: 7.5 & 6.6 : 24 times each
Second most used: 10.0 : 21 times
Note: I sail most weekends, also if I cannot get planing. Missed 5 weeks for breaking a rib.
May this year be better for everyone
hey, what am i looking at here? These stats are impressive and show youve got a great attitude man, great stats, if i had a windsurfing dream team you'd be on it!!!, you left off your top speed for the year? didnt want to shame a lot of people probably,,,,,,mate ive been wanting to ask you about formula gear, are you enjoying it, is it fun to sail the big board with just an 8m, and does it still perform well in lighter wind with just an 8m or do you really need the 10m, c ya soon
Ha, ha I certainly cannot be alongside someone clocking 20,000 kms. My best speed was 28.5, but this post was more about what we use most and the average conditions, I would like to hear from others.
As far as the formula I had some great days in around 15-17 knots with the 10.0. I also had some of my scariest moments with the same rig in just a few knots more wind. In my opinion you need at least a 10 to get the best out of that type of boards, with an 8m probably a large slalom board would be easier and work better in the chop. You're welcome to try my board any time, but I cannot take that up Canton
I've been in Sydney one year. I'm surprised by how windy it is here. Your stats seem to say otherwise, and everyone told me it would be otherwise.
I'd have been well happy all year with an 85 litre and a 5.0. I'm ~80kg. Am I in a different Sydney?
ha, thats impressive evil panda, maybe your further south, or maybe a different approach, i guess my most used combo is 7.7 on a 121l slalom board or a 7m on a 110l, yeah im lighter than you and have only used my 5m once this year, a few weeks ago in that big southerly, thanks powersloshin, thats great feed back man, thank you

I know what you mean, once I was out with the formula and the 10.0 and Fez had a 90lt board and 7m sail and he could plane earlier than me. I was sure he had a hidden engine, but the truth is that he is good and knows how to pump and I'm technically challenged. But I also like this feeling of being powered up, when you're pushing your legs, pulling on the harness....
Maybe it is windier further South? I went out at North Cronulla one afternoon and got completely floored. Had to give up.
Most of the seabreezes I sailed in Botany Bay, my usual haunt, had 30 knot + gusts. I was sometimes seriously overpowered on a 5.4 (but the SuperFreak tends to handle those conditions better than anything else I've ever used). I'm still astounded by this coming from the Cold Toast where 25 is the max for a seabreeze, and 18 the norm, although they tend to be a super consistent breeze in comparison. My most used sail there by far was a 7.2. The few seabreezes I sailed in Sydney last year that were in the low 20's were gusty with holes everywhere, and kinda ****e overall. Actually the seabreezes here, in comparison, are very, very gusty.
I'm buying a ~4.7 for next season, and I've already shipped my 80l evo down and it used it a few times.
All-in-all I'm pretty impressed with the wind in Sydney. ![]()
