Hi there,

I'm heading up to Hawks Nest for a week before christmas and as my in-laws are there I plan on ditching my wife and daughter and getting out windsurfing as much as possible. Not sailed there before though so would love some info on what to expect:

1. What are the best spots to launch from in the map below?
2. What is the normal wind direction? N/E?
3. What kit should I bring?

Any other info about sailing there would be great too.

Lastly I'm a complete novice in the waves, but keen to give it a shot, any idea what it's like sailing on the ocean side (no. 5 above)?

Thanks for the info,
Adam

Lucky you, a beautiful spot.
Best spots to launch from are No.1 and middle of 3 and 4.
Winda Woppa lets you head straight out into the bay in a nor-easter, long runs.
If you rig and launch from Jimmy's Beach caravan park its side offshore but you head up towards the prominent sand spit that juts out from the beach and do runs down into the bay back towards your launch point. Crytsal clear water too.
Like most parts of coastal NSW the sea breeze is usually happening but like anywhere you can get fronts and wind from most directions.
You can sail in anything from west (gusty) through southerly around to the NE.
Best is NE but for great bump and jump SW to SE is fun.
A mid size slalom board (90-110 ltrs) or similar freeride board has enough float to get you out and blasting.
Sails from 7.8 and down are fine, obviously depending on strength and direction.
Wave gear is great in strong south winds.
Be aware of the tides, in an ebb tide a lot of water is going fairly quickly out through the heads so dont get caught out in the middle with a dropping breeze.
Lots of wild life in and out of the water makes it fun too. Also be aware there can be some big men in grey suits around as well.
Hope this helps and enjoy.
Ill be over at Nelsons bay for a few days and will come over to Jimmy's for a sail, might see ya out there.
