Where would you go for the flattest water in Sydney for a southerly?

Where will you be this Mon/Tue if the forecast comes through?

Not Sydney but if it's SSW Canton beach. You need a weedfin. SW is better and S doable but not as good an angle.

Damn right. There have been a few forecasts of strong southerly winds lately. when it comes to the day of the predicted strong winds all we get is rain and SFA winds. It must be pretty difficult to predict winds generated by low pressure systems, troughs and weather systems like that.

If talking about the wind makes it dissappear then you can say that cyclone Ita won't make landfall in Queensland. There's no place for meteorology.

as to your question tho - a few of us sail out of st george sailing club at sandringham in southerlys.

the sand bar is fun in low tides and get some nice flat sections. a lot flatter than kuemagh but the wind is usualy a bit more gusty.
also if it cold and raining we rig / derig in the boat shed and can have a hot shower and a beer after sailing :)

Forecast is on....can't jinx this one!!

Roar, you mean the club at Sans Souci? There's two. One in Sandringham is not St George.

Canton beach....I don't have any weedies. If I a make a purchase forecast will definitely suffer. I best keep away. Will keep that one for later.

What's the wind strength like that far South? from recent experience Brighton tends to cop the full force in a Southerly and is pretty wild on the gybes. I wouldn't mind giving down there a go, but interested to know what to rig, when I'd be on a 4.9 or 5.4 up the Nth end in 25-30kts?

^^^ sorry buddy i dont understand what to tell you, the wind strength shouldn't be that different from sandringham to kyeemagh in a southerly,,,taren pt, and all that area that roar is indicating is the flattest on offer, its an enjoyable spot at the sailing club, easy park, rig, a bit of a walk on sand then straight into the action,,, canton is a little bit better, not flatter but more flat water as opposed to strips, but weedy, real patchy but safe ect narra lakes, definately work better more West, but wsw is doable, collary would be ok, flattish, cross to offshore,,,,,,,,,,,,,,there is a new spot near toukley that the locals are very excited about, thanks to deltas a lot of spots are now more accessible..............................................ENJOY

The Wind at kyemagh tends to be slightly stronger and more consistent as it settles down as it crosses over botany bay this on the other hand also builds up the wind chop more.
at the sand bar it can be just as strong but tends to fluctuate more due to the layout of the bay as there is less area for it to settle but on other hand this also means its a lot flatter. There is also often a funnel effect across the sand bar which leads to some wild bear away.
The best time to sail is 2 hours or so before low tide as the wind and tide will be running in same direction.
The tides in this area create a fairly strong current into the bay past dolls point. when the tide turns and starts coming in against the wind the chop picks up significantly in a strong wind.

So Kyeemagh and Birghton Le Sands still get wind in a SW, just a little further offshore? With bigger chop/swell of course. : )
(Kids are on a 4pm flight with nanny. Might be one of those "thpecial moments", wave to them on the plane)

I've sailed Dolls Point in a SW and it was really good. Incoming tide made for some nice ramps, but had smooth gybe area at each end.

Kyeemagh is pretty awful in a souwester. I've sailed there for 20 minutes, then given up and driven two hours up to Canton in a wet wetsuit and had a ball

I think your post needs to be clarified a bit. Kyeemagh in a Southerly is definitely better than Sandringham. It may not be windier (but in my opinion it is) but it certainly is more consistent. 6 years flicking back and forth between the 2 spots has given me enough experience to comment. SW is a different story, but S or SE it is the best in the Bay. Flattest water in the Bay will however be at Sandringham up at the strip which is only exposed on a low tide.
Canton is INFINITELY better than the bay IF you want flat water. As long as you have a good weed fin you will have a ball. As long as the weed is up then the water will be some of the flattest you have ever sailed and you can get NM runs in easily.
The Toukley spot is moot as it is only a proposition in a NE. For S or SW head to Canton for sure.

If you have wave gear ie small sails around 4.5 and a wave board then Kyeemagh in a southerly is no problem.
Slalom gear in the other hand starts getting out of control when the wind is gusting around 30 knots on the bay in a southerly.
But a 15-25knot southerly,(thats anything from SSW to SE) is generally the best sailing that Sydney has to offer,no jet skies,no BBQs,consistent wind, the best.

Forecast fell short but still a great session at Canton in 5- 23kts SSW /SW and big gear.. aching now though..
. Best sail in about 6 weeks- planed 95% of the time!
