From SA and in to wave sailing. In Sydney for 2 weeks and there seems to be just enough for a light wind sail. Staying in cronulla. Is there somewhere to sail in waves near here?
There really is no where on the south side of Sydney to recommend for a light wind sail in a southerly, especially with solid storm surf.
If you don't mind sailing challenging bump and jump on heavy swell then the southern end of Kyeemagh, Botany Bay, is fun in a good SE or southerly....atleast 18knots, preferably 20knots ++.
Cronulla and Wanda are your best bets for wave sailing south of the city.
We came from WA and looked for months for the best places to sail, wind direction, strength, parking etc etc and have settled for Kyeemagh for all winds except anything Westerly. Unfortunately over the last 5 years weekend sailing there on a north easterly has become a nightmare. Wild jet skiers, fishing lines, smokey BBQ's, mansions with double driveways etc etc and water police to afraid to police the locals behaviour. No probs during the week or when the wind is southerly/SE.
Just south of the net is better for launching, longer runs.. though parking/rigging room is better north of the net but the council, in their wisdom, have constructed a long, narrow, windy walk to the water !!
Don't get discouraged by the recent winds, which are typical for this time of the year, though the water temp is unusually warm. Chase the SE and southerlies. Summer north easterlies start Oct/Nov and last until around end of Feb.
Long Reef beach might be the go this Sunday 4 May in the middle of the day when the forecast is for WSW. That direction is about 30 degrees offshore so you'll want to make sure all you're gear hangs together and that you're reasonably experienced.
