Quick question. New to Sydney town. I'll be needing nothing more than a 3mm wetsuit for now, right?

- Qld'r that doesn't like the cold.

Its warming up but today is quite cool. Tomorrow looks like it will be cool too. However the north easters and warmer weather have started already. Not sure how that relates to wetsuits but if I go windsurfing tomorrow I'll be using my 4 by 3 full length wetsuit.

Welcome Panda.
You should be right from now on with a 3 mil. Usually by end of September and start of October its boardies and a rashy until at least end of March.
Tomorrow might be a bit cool as the water is still cold and the wind from the cool direction but at least it will be sunny.
This time last Dads day it was a nice sea breeze.
I had a super quick squirt on sunset yesterday arvo in a 3/2 s/s steamer and it was fine, I also hate the cold.

I save money on wetsuits by eating fried foods, and big portions of lard, for a more natural insulation.

Depends how much you can "harden da f**k up". A while back I Sailed with a Swedish guy in a westerly down at La Perous. It was mid winter. I wore a 4 mill suit he was in a shorty. Obviously he really "hardened da f**k up."

Panda,

Have you got a steamer or are you buying a new one? Maybe 4mm or 3/4mm combo if you feel the cold.

In September-October the water temps can actually drop (more to do with the ocean currents I believe) & sometimes it's Nov-Dec until it's boardies weather.

I remember Dec 2010 the water temp dropped to 15 deg and most of the kids at nippers were pestering their parents for wetsuits.

I don't feel the cold and I think my wetsuit is only 2/3 mm.

Doesn't work.. My backside has plenty of fat and is the first thing to get cold if I sleep out down the snow...Get plenty of muscle that will warm you up!

You are tough Craig, it was bloody freezing on Saturday!

Its true about summer though and not usually needing a wetsuit at all. However if La Nina is gone the water may be a bit cooler this summer than what we are used to. If so I say bring it on!
