The Gerroa wind trace shows a 76 knot (140kph) gust at about 12:30pm today. Is this for real? Anyone down there live to tell the tale?

Yes, its for real ... I'm feeding the wind data for Gerroa to Seabreeze .. total white-out on the water with mini-whirlwinds all over the place .... no one has been out for a few days sensibly [}:)]

Lake Illawarra was entertaining. Windiest I've ever experienced. Dead flat for the port gybes. Waves ( and a welcome wind shadow) in the channel the other way. Had to sit out some huge gusts in the knee deep water. Surely no one sailed in the ocean?

Yes, the lake was showing its alter-ego yesterday, and even more so today. Got out yesterday on a 5.8 (smallest I've got), downhauled and outhauled to the max and still had to abort sailing during the squalls. Others were out on low 4's. Between 4:30 and 5 there was a really nice spell where the 5.8 was great.

A few of us sailed at Port Kembla today...fairly hard to bottom turn when you're approaching warp 10 and it has to be hitting 50kts. Some of the gusts were insane, just brace yourself, hang on and ride it out haha. You know when you get that mist getting whipped of the wave peaks it's quite windy

Only ever launched from the Illawarra yacht club. It's an awkward launch off a concrete warf, but I've mastered it now, I think. The first ding is the deepest.

Just found Port Kembla on the map, that's inside the breakwater? Are the 5 islands a reasonable downwind safety net?

I assume you're looking at the harbour at Port Kembla. Thats not where you sail.
We sail at Port Kembla Beach in a Westerly. North end of the beach (stretches south to Windang).
