As a new windsurfer to Sydney, is there anyone planning on sailing tomorrow at Botany? The wind seems to be looking good +18 knts. Don't want to be the only shark bait out there. Some quick questions to the forum:
Is it worthwhile in a Southerly and is there a decent place to launch in said direction?
Much appreciated.
There are always windsurfers around on good wind days, any day of the week, any time. (I must be in the wrong job). Southerlies are more challenging than NEsterlies, will be choppy in the bay. Search past threads for all options...
And I wouldn't worry about sharks, I haven't heard of any attacks ever happening in Botany
Thanks for the reply, powersloshin. Will look through old threads.
Any decent place (flat water) to sail in the north of Sydney? Heard about Narrabeen Lakes, otherwise I will have a peek at Botany. Haven't sailed for the past 3 yrs, but looking to sail regularly now.
Where are you based and how important is flat water to you? If you want flat water in strong winds then Canton Beach near Toukley on the Central Coast is the go, however a weed fin is mandatory. Check out the pictures and video I made on a day with strong southerly winds a couple of weeks ago. It will give you a bit of an idea. There will be other windsurfers at Canton.
Unless you can't travel much I would not recommend Narrabeen Lake in a southerly. The wind will be very gusty and it won't be that much fun.
If you go to my youtube channel you will see a few videos of windsurfing at the spots you have mentioned.
Bearman, I can almost guarantee that there will be at least half a dozen people out at Botany tomorrow. Try Bestic street, that's quite popular when the wind blows from the south.
bearman,
if you want to stay on the north side try pittwater at iluka rd (palm beach) or long reef/collaroy if you want waves.
manly (syd harbour) also good. launch from manly cove, oceanworld end or ferry end depending on where you can park. there should be someone in the harbour at some stage since it will be windy most of the day.
I'm working but I'll try for a late one in the harbour or manly beach if the wind holds.
Great to have a spread of different views. Small waves no problem, just from +1m as shore break!! I'm a free rider, gave up racing, etc. quite a while back (+20 yrs). Never been a wave sailor.
I will be doing some more research and will also pop down to Botany tomorrow morning. Will meet up whoever is around and take it from there. Have seen some of the photo's and videos posed on the board, looking good!
Nice to have an active windsurfing community. Living out at Gordon, so about 40 min to Botany and +30 to Palm beach (Botany dependant on traffic). Looking forward to seeing you all out on the water.
Drove past bestic street saw 2 sails completely motionless. Probably give it a go later in the week could be some south easterly on the horizon .l hope. ![]()
