No more kiters near the island at flat top for the sake of the 'little tern' birds, was sailing there on thursday when NPWS were hammering in the signs. Has to make you wonder if it is environmentilism gone too far, just concerned as kiting is one thing, next will be windsurfing...
The reason is the kites seem predatory
I guess kiters have the potential to do more damage than windsurfers do considering they usually have 9-12sqm of kite on 20m worth of string! I doubt somthing like this would effect windsurfing in the area too much.
Hey mabbott
Don't think windsurfing is an issue (as long as we leave the birds alone and let them breed, don't crush their nests/scrapes in the sand).
Its just that the terns can see huge 'wingspans' circling above them, which would look alot like a falcon/eagle/bird of prey, so 150m of Voluntary kite exclusion around flat top for (I think) about 3months, will let them do their buisness.
Predators when your trying to breed would really ruin your mating/nesting chances.
Dan,
maybe you could approach the council on the same grounds.... that is because of your "little terns" being made to look even smaller by the kook kiters.
Aha, just noticed that one. But remember, any "small tern" on a waveboards is still better than a "sulphur crested dick" on a kite my friend![]()
