It just have to come, attack yesterday was inevitable. On Australia Day long week end , a large 6 - 7 meter shark
was spotted by the westpac helicopter close to the beach Brighton Le sand while searching for the lost skin diver.
6 to 7 meters, that's big !

Bare island and surrounds are well know GW areas.

Some years ago the police were recovering a body of a suspected murder victim in the same area , just as they got hold of the body a big GW popped up and literally took it out of their hands

Anyone want to do a run across Botany Bay. Last one across ...doesn't make it across?
I'm going to have bloody nightmares next time I sail there.

I was snorkling with family a few years back when my mother-in-law started freaking out, pointing, and making the shark signal (hand on top of head in fin shape). It was just her reflection in the mask.

And what was the time she was in the water???
Yep, around 7pm. We all know that's one of the worst times to go swimming.

Why is 7pm the worst time?
I think if a sharks hungry at midday, it eats you at midway.

The whole dusk & dawn thing is a myth, same goes for weather, like when it's overcast.

I'm no fish expert, but I can make a story on why feeding might come on around dusk.

The various small things that live in shallow water and hide away during the day come out at dusk. Little fish start eating them and bigger fish eat them in turn. At the top of the chain is the shark. Same scenario would operate on very cloudy days. Low light levels bring out the organisms at the bottom of the food chain.

Reasonable theory, but not substantiated by the evidence.

Suggesting she put herself at higher risk because she went swimming later isn't fair, go in the water at any time your at equal risk.

If it makes you feel better, sure only swim at midday

As I recall the reasons given for a heightened risk around sunrise & sunset, is because of the angle of the light entering the water & the shadows cast by someone in the water, which increases the chance of an attack due to the shark thinking someone was a seal etc.

A decent fin was spotted by one of my work mates yesterday around Bear Island so still hanging around in that area. Seen a couple myself around Watts Reef and near the Capt Cook Buoy.

Pretty close Mr Milk. Essentially the change of light period has a flow on effect from the tiniest morsels, as this all has to do with their less advanced eyes which simply struggle to adjust to the changing conditions. This snow balls rapidly, and the food chain broadens. It amazes me that the entire dawn / dusk feeding period all anglers wait for is triggered by less advanced eye sight. So essentially its about opportunity. Either way, that 2 hour period either side of dawn and dusk is prime feeding time- whether you're a enthusiastic sardine eating plankton, or a great white.

Sure, sharks feed when they want, but their far more likely- and successful- at dawn and dusk.

Actually the highest percentage of reported shark attacks are in the middle of the day something like 99%
In fact the posting of a dog being taken at kurnel on seabreaze is the first reported taking of a dog .
As far as I know there absolutely no records of dogs being taken by sharks.
Yet its folk law .

I can't see why a shark wouldn't try a dog. I'm told they taste like penguin.
