Hi Leo,
I screwed my knee at soccer last year, tore my ACL in half! Mid Jan this year I had a full knee reconstruction. Bottom line considering you are still having pain and and possibly swelling still(???) I recommend you go and get a referral for an MRI and just check you don't have any longer term damage. My initial consultation with GP as well as Physio had them saying it was a strain of my medial ligaments....how wrong they were. You may then also need to go see an ortho surgeon just to be sure. It's a small price to pay for piece of mind.
If in fact you are ok and it was just a strain, the best exercises are cycling and swimming. You can also do lunges both standing and walking, try them with small weights to help even moreso. Another good one is to put a small object on the ground and jump over over it off two feet from side to side, back and forth etc. Do reps of say 30 jumps then rest then start again. Don't overdo it though, knees take a long time to heel and get right. It will be a slow process.
I feel your pain, I've been off the water now for 10 weeks and it's killing me. I still have a good 4-6 weeks before I'm even meant to step on a board again. The reality will be something totally different however as Nelson Bay for Easter beckons and I sure as hell won't be without my gear when I go there [}:)]
Good luck and keep me posted as to how you get on.
Cheers,

Captain Carnage,
This is the reason I keep telling you to stop doing your crazy dismounts and catapults.
Seriously though, do exactly as Rex says. Ive been through the same thing as Andrew (league and touch footy). Get it checked by a professional, they dont usually get better by themselves and if it is some sort of tear etc then you need to get it treated right.
And dont forget you owe me a DVD!!
Cheers,
Larko.

i have the same problem in almost the same stack! high speed did a jump landed bad didnt get front foot out of the straps intime and ended up under the board (while the board was flat) twisted with my foot still in the strap! been off windsurfing for about 5 weeks now due to no wind and it still hurts from time to time...

If a naughty nurse kisses it better does it really work?

Wow, still got pain...and I share it,
Three weks ago, snapped a fin at over 30knts...and the resulting wipe out was big, sudden and painfull. I have a severe grade two medial cruciant ligament injury.
Got another week of the water....I hope

This is what I did
I sat down and though very carefully about how I fell and researched what I thought I had (remember you know what happened personally). I had some bruises on arms, and facial marks from the board that helped me put it together..
I got opinions from TWO physio's who are specialist in the bio-mechanics of the body and joint injury. (not all physio's are good in all areas of the body).
(Pay the extra to see a bio-mechanic psecialist in the knee area...for ideas as to finding them, find someone who plays rugby or snow ski's heaps and they will know )

I also paid very high important to supplimentation of the body during the healing process (as should be done daily anyway as food today is hollow in nutrition). Not just eating well, as this is done anyway, but increased my nutrition in forms of vitamin and mineral intake, EFA's, increase protien intake (suppliment) and HGH stimulation (no not injecting or taking illegals).

Pay attention to the exercises given to you by the physio. As simple and easy as they are at times, do not overlook doing them as directed to increase the strength in area to support the strain so as to enable the injury to heal

Bottom line, if you still have pain, then the injury is still there. Pain is the symtom, make sure the physio is treating the injury not the pain
Find another physio, who is a specialist in the area of knees. Getting a MRI is GREAT advice.

One thing that has really helped me is full leg brace, ankle to hip. This has allowed the MCL to rest and repair and the leg brace is taking any side load.... get a brace if need and pay for a good one!!!

Having had my fair shair of injury from extreme sport and my proffessional sport career, I cannot stress the importance of quality advice.

cheers
