Got some snaps of Duncan sailing off Bear Island. Wind was pretty patchy, but there was a bit of a wave....
that looks awesome, sailed there on sunday for the first time but it didn't look anything like that!
that's awesome given it's a 'harbour' entrance.
not windy for long on Monday either, nice effort to be out there and get pics.
Queensciff bomby was breaking but too SW to sail & too difficult to get out a'way
Looks like the Firelight. It can be s heavy wave and nasty launch. Did Duncan launch over the rocks?
Thanks for taking the shots Jon!
yeah the wave does appear fat in the photos but i can assure you at the peak it draws hard of the reef then has a short wall. hitable but at a heavy cost if you get it wrong. when you go down out there that's it, the power rips you everywhere normally down and generally your rig in another direction no holding on to it.
that day it was actually cross on, that's why the clew is so open. no wind on the bear away, so was doing a little shoulder hoping.
west is actually the ideal direction (cross off) and the wave suddenly cleans up and barrels down the line a bit. seen surfers in barrels where they are below see level.
where do you launch from to get to queenscliff bombie, that wave looks the goods when its big.
duncan,
You got a touch of crazy to be out at Bear Is. Good to see!
I haven't been in the Manly Daily yet for sailing the Q'Cliff bombie. That is a bit of a 'Homer' on the bucket list.
It breaks maybe 5-6 times a year from about 1.5-2.0 metres. Then you need a pretty strong S wind. It's not really that good a surfing wave as it rolls or pitches from different spots and doesn't have a big shoulder so better suited to either tow-in or SUP or wavesailing! ENE swell or S/SE swell it will break. Sometimes the fatter waves will carry through to the beach so that's when you are happy to be on a waveboard.
Launching is straight off the beach which can be difficult esp at lower tide. Hence the need for the strong wind. Often the v strong southerlies mid year have are SSW so sometimes the harbour is the go.
