Hi all, new to Sydney and missing my wavesailing days and thinking about getting some equipment. Just a few questions if I can pick your brains!
1) from what I hear it's best in summer, is also there any winter sailing to speak of?
2) how many weekends over summer/winter can you realistically expect to sail? Thinking 15knts+ and consistent planing conditions. Is it consistent enough to get out one a month or more?
3) how often will you need a sail less than 4.5m or is that a waste of money in your view (assuming 80kg). Will a 5.2-5.4 be OK as biggest size?
4) should I start at wanda (assuming south Sydney) or are there any other consistent spots to consider?
5) I hear NE winds are best, are there other consistent wind directions to keep an eye out for (particularly any which provide cross shore conditions and where to go)
Sorry if asking too many questions and thanks for the help!
Welcome but you picked the WORST summer to come to Sydney. usually we get nice sea breezes (NE) but this season has been ****e!!!
Also heard last night that for the next 3 months of Autumn its going to be wet, wet, wet!!!!!!!!! Like we havent had enough freakin' rain already, the bloody dam is going to overflow.
Definitely better off to start at Wanda and work your way south to Corrimal, Windang, Gerroa etc. Got more luck down there especially if your after waves.
the main sydney dam is full, that's what 49 days of summer rain does!
I don't think (most) windsurfers care about the rain as long as it is windy as well.
There may be a few NE's in March although the key ingredients are sunny days and a high pressure system (being very general). The sea water is warm ATM so that doesn't assist for the NE building through the day.
Autumn is not typically good but there may be a few solid 25-30 knot southerlies.
Illawarra area down to Gerroa has been known to get NE's through to April/May and sometimes a 'pressure breeze' NE can blow over 15 knots in Sydney.
Check Illawarra & Newcastle seabreeze forecasts if you are prepared to travel 2 hours either side of Sydney to sail.
